Sandro Mamukelashvili and Ziaire Williams improved their standing during the Lakers’ preseason, while Dalton Knecht and Bronny James struggled to establish their offense.

Five preseason games gave the Los Angeles Lakers a clearer look at their options, even if they did not settle every rotation question.

The most useful distinction is between players who strengthened their case for meaningful minutes and those who left important questions unanswered. A strong shooting stretch does not guarantee a starting job, and a difficult week does not determine an entire season.

Still, several performances deserve attention as L.A. moves into games that count.

Biggest Riser: Sandro Mamukelashvili

Mamukelashvili made the strongest sustained impression among the Lakers’ newcomers.

He averaged 13.4 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.4 assists across all five games, shooting 55.6% from the field and 54.2% from 3-point range.

The shooting created an obvious benefit: defenders had a reason to follow him away from the basket. His passing offers another way to help when opponents load up against Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves.

A player who can receive the ball, identify an opening and keep the possession moving gives the primary creators fewer problems to solve. Mamukelashvili’s next challenge is maintaining that usefulness when opponents have more time to prepare for him.

Biggest Riser: Ziaire Williams

Williams produced one of the most encouraging stretches, although his limited availability requires perspective.

He averaged 13.5 points in two appearances and made all five of his 3-point attempts. In the finale against Denver, he scored 14 points in 10 minutes.

Nobody should expect perfect shooting to continue. The more useful question is whether Williams can consistently make defenses account for him while contributing through cuts and defensive activity.

His opportunity to start the finale gave that possibility additional significance. He and Matisse Thybulle opened alongside Dončić, Reaves and Walker Kessler, putting Williams directly into a lineup worth evaluating for the regular season.

Biggest Faller: Dalton Knecht

Knecht needed to make a stronger offensive case.

He averaged 2.8 points in four appearances, shooting 25% overall and 14.3% from beyond the arc.

For a player whose clearest contribution is perimeter scoring, those results leave little evidence to support a larger immediate role.

The concern is how he earns enough minutes to establish a rhythm. On a roster with several alternatives, opportunities can become harder to find when the skill expected to separate a player does not show up.

Biggest Faller: Bronny James

Bronny James also finished with work to do offensively.

Across five appearances, he averaged 2.2 points and 2.8 assists while shooting 25% from the field and 12.5% from 3-point range.

The passing provides something to build on. However, a guard must also give defenders a reason to respect his scoring opportunities.

James does not need a high volume of shots to contribute. He needs to convert enough open chances to keep possessions from becoming more difficult for everyone else.

His preseason leaves that as a development priority entering the regular season.
