Bronny James’ uneven preseason leaves questions about his role, even as roster reporting points more directly toward a possible Dalton Knecht departure.

Bronny James has reached opening week with work to do, regardless of how the Los Angeles Lakers resolve their final roster decision.

Los Angeles has been working to reduce its roster from 16 guaranteed contracts to 15 standard spots. That pressure invites scrutiny of every player near the end of the bench, including James. But the reporting has focused more directly on efforts to move Dalton Knecht than on an impending departure for James.

The bigger concern about James is what he has shown on the court. His preseason didn't show he is ready for a dependable rotation role, and JJ Redick’s assessment reflected that uncertainty.

Redick sees a gap between practices and games

“I don’t think he’s played well in the four preseason games, but he’s had good practices,” Redick said in comments shared by The NBA Base.

That distinction matters. Practice gives coaches a chance to evaluate progress that does not always appear in a box score. Games reveal whether a player can apply those improvements against unfamiliar opponents, changing coverages and the pressure of live possessions.

James needs those two evaluations to become more consistent.

Redick’s broader explanation included rhythm and the combinations around James as factors in his performance. That context gives the Lakers reasons to keep evaluating him, while still acknowledging that his game production has fallen short.

For a developing guard, the path toward useful minutes does not require becoming a leading scorer. It requires making possessions easier for the players around him: moving the ball promptly, recognizing defensive responsibilities and avoiding mistakes that force teammates to recover.

Those contributions are especially important when opportunities are brief. A reserve may receive only a handful of possessions to show the coaching staff that a particular lineup can function.

A roster spot would leave another competition ahead

The Lakers’ roster situation should not be treated as proof that James is about to be waived.

Stein’s latest reporting described continued efforts to trade Knecht, potentially while acquiring frontcourt help. That makes Knecht the more immediate focus of the publicly reported roster discussions.

However, surviving a roster cut would settle only one question for James. It would not guarantee regular minutes or remove the need for improvement.

The distinction is important when evaluating his future. Remaining under contract, dressing for games and earning a reliable rotation role are separate steps. Progress toward one does not automatically secure the others.

James’ next task is to give Redick evidence that the good practice work can carry into games. That means producing stretches in which the Lakers can trust his decisions and keep their offense and defense organized.

The preseason does not determine his entire career. It does explain why his role remains unsettled entering the regular season.

The Lakers can continue believing in his development while expecting more from his performance. For James, turning that belief into dependable minutes remains the challenge.
