Bane’s perimeter explosion against Miami signals a potential offensive breakthrough for Orlando, highlighting the elite three-point shooting necessary to transform the young roster into a legitimate Eastern Conference threat.

Orlando Magic guard Desmond Bane shot like there was no tomorrow in the Magic’s final preseason game with a 136-115 win over the Miami Heat.

Bane shot 7-12 from three-point range, a key focus for the Magic this season to take the next step as championship contenders.

Although it was just a preseason win for the Magic, they are building the foundation for success.

On the latest episode of the Full Court Magic Podcast, host Don Strouble was joined by Heat Wave host Anthony Aguirre and spoke about the biggest needs for improvement between the Magic and the Heat for their season outlook:

For the Magic, it has to be the three-point shooting. That has to come around this time of the year if they want to find success. And I believe it starts with Paolo Banchero. He's not the best three-point shooter, but I believe he can become at least an efficient threat. So if he can get that going, it really unlocks the offense. Franz Wagner obviously missed a ton of time last year. That really hurt the Magic, especially come playoff time. Having that size is still going to do them a lot of justice throughout the year. But if they can get that three-point shooting, that could potentially put them over the hump than what most would expect in the Eastern Conference."

After the win, Bane spoke with media. Here’s a breakdown of what he had to say.

The preseason win over Miami and defensive performance: Bane acknowledged the Magic’s offensive success but said their defense did not meet the team’s expectations, particularly against Miami’s fast-paced attack and ballhandlers. He noted that Orlando did enough to secure the win but emphasized the need to review the film, correct mistakes and improve defensively.

Where the Magic stand in the Eastern Conference: Bane expressed confidence in Orlando’s ability to compete against any team in the conference. He said the Magic showed that potential in stretches last season but stressed the importance of consistency. He also pointed to the team’s improved approach, work ethic and preparation as reasons for optimism.

Shooting 7-for-12 from 3-point range: Bane downplayed the significance of his shooting performance, emphasizing that the preseason is about preparing for the long season ahead. He said the priority is developing good habits, understanding the team’s details and building consistency rather than focusing on individual shooting results.

Injuries to young teammates Jase Richardson and Noah Penda: Bane expressed disappointment about the injuries, praising both players for their strong preseason performances and contributions to the team. While acknowledging that he did not know the severity of their injuries, he expressed hope that they would not miss significant time. Bane also voiced confidence in the group’s progress, highlighting the identity the Magic have established on both ends of the floor.

Preparing for opening night and regular-season excitement: Bane acknowledged the excitement surrounding the start of a new season but said the team’s extended time together over the summer has helped it feel prepared. He highlighted the group’s opportunities to work together in August and September, adding that the familiarity and continuity have allowed the Magic to build momentum heading into the regular season.
