Desmond Bane is fueling the Orlando Magic’s surge, making history as the first player since Tracy McGrady to score 37 points in back-to-back games. With forward Paolo Banchero sidelined by injury, Bane has stepped up, becoming a key factor in the team’s current winning streak.
After their 125-120 win over the Bulls, coach Jamahl Mosley told media that Bane’s recent surge is a result of his leadership and ability to find creative ways to put points on the board.
He’s a winner,” Mosley said. “He’s going to find a way to win no matter what. I’m talking to him in some of the huddles ‘Hey, you okay?’ he’s ready to go. He’s going to find a way to help this team win games. That’s who he is, that’s who he’s always been. He’s been a leader, a vocal leader. His toughness, his ability to make plays down the stretch — that’s who we’ve asked him to be and that’s who he is."
“He’s just finding different ways,” Mosley added. “Sometimes he’s off ball. The way teams are playing him — top-locking him, not letting him come off clean pin-downs and pick-and-rolls, some teams have blitzed him — he’s just trying to make the right play and get early easy baskets in order to find a cleaner rhythm.”
Bane scored 10 of his 37 points from the free-throw line and knocked down three shots from beyond the arc. He shared that during the offseason, he focused on becoming the best all-around scorer he can be.
" I work every summer to be the most complete basketball player I can be,” Bane said. “Nowhere near where I want to be, but I feel like my game’s in a place where I can impact the game in a lot of different ways."
Along with scoring in a variety of ways, Bane has also stepped up big for the Magic in clutch moments this season, already hitting a game-winner.
“It’s been an evolution,” Bane said. “From my time in Memphis I started as a catch-and-shoot guy. The year Ja [Morant] was suspended I was put in a lot of situations to close games and honestly didn’t do a great job, growing pains. Now I feel very comfortable in those situations, whether I’m on the ball or off the ball, confident that I can make a play."
