The Orlando Magic are one of the hottest teams in the league, fueled by comfort and major offensive growth. They’ve ranked among the NBA’s top offenses over the past five games, highlighted by a 144-point win over the Philadelphia 76ers. The rhythm from deep and the steady contribution from the bench have driven this surge and all of it has come without superstar Paolo Banchero.
Last season, the Magic finished as the league’s worst three-point shooting team. During this recent stretch, their shooting from beyond the arc has powered their offensive rise. After the win, coach Jamahl Mosley said their defensive effort is creating the open looks that are falling.
“When you get stops, get out and run, get early easy baskets, it changes the way teams defend you, they collapse earlier,” Mosley said. “So you’re finding a lot more feet-set threes in transition. Our guys are trusting the pass when you’re open you let it rip, if not you move it on, attack the basket, put two on the ball, and create a problem for someone else.”
Guard Anthony Black, who scored a career-high 31 points in the win over the 76ers, said the team is moving the ball more efficiently and creating open looks all over the floor.
“We’re just moving the ball a lot more,” Black added. “The ball’s popping. Dudes are playing off close-outs, getting open shots. Our defense has stepped up, which is allowing us to get transition looks – that sparks our offense, our defense, and the energy on the team when we get out and run and get layups and dunks.”
Guard Tyus Jones, who struggled early in the season, is starting to find his groove as a playmaker and floor general running the second unit. He spoke with the media before the matchup with the Detroit Pistons and said the team’s recent success comes from building trust with his new teammates on the court.
“Trusting each other,” Jones said. “Even in the ups and downs of the game, sticking with our process – generating good looks, open shots, trusting the guy next to you to make shots. Not just trying to make plays for yourself but making the right play. We’ve got so much firepower that when we’re playing that way we’re tough to beat. A number of different guys can get hot on any given night we just got to stick with that.”
