The Orlando Magic have found their new head coach in San Antonio Spurs assistant, Sean Sweeney.
The Orlando Magic’s coaching search has come to an end after it was reported by ESPN insider Shams Charania on Friday that the Magic were finalizing a deal with San Antonio Spurs associate head coach, Sean Sweeney.
Following the news of the deal, I took to the Full Court Magic Podcast to talk about who Sweeney is and what he brings to the table for Orlando. My comments can be found below, along with a link to episode 25 of Full Court Magic.
"This is episode 25 of Full Court Magic, and we are here today to talk about the Orlando Magic's new head coach, Sean Sweeney. The Magic are finalizing a deal to make Sweeney the franchise's next head coach nearly four weeks after the dismissal of Jamahl Mosley and the Magic's disappointing first-round playoff exit at the hands of the Detroit Pistons. You know, I went on the air recently to talk about the length of time that it was taking for the Magic to hire a head coach, especially after Jamahl Mosley was hired by the New Orleans Pelicans.
I'm sure some fans were thinking, 'Okay, our old coach is gone and got another job, and we still don't have anyone,’ and there was speculation there, and I think that this front office really wanted to take its time in terms of candidate evaluation, and it did so. It did its due diligence and homework. Billy Donovan and Jeff Van Gundy reportedly met with the Magic and were finalists for this job. I had talked about that also, but I had also brought up the prospect of Sweeney in my last episode as his name began to enter the conversation and really pick up some momentum, and he is the guy."
"It was reported that the Magic brass were meeting with Sweeney during San Antonio's Western Conference Finals battle against the Oklahoma City Thunder, which is still ongoing as the teams are slated for a decisive Game 7 matchup on Saturday. Shams Sharania, ESPN NBA insider, was the one who reported on Sweeney's near hiring here and the finalizing of this deal. He also reported that Sweeney will remain with the Spurs through the end of their postseason run, whether that ends tomorrow night in Oklahoma City or after the NBA Finals.
So, let's talk about what Sean Sweeney can bring to the table for the Magic and really who he is. The Magic opted to go with another first-time head coach, and I talked about it in recent episodes and in articles that I had written, that President of Basketball Operations Jeff Weltman, following his decision to fire Jamahl Mosley in a press conference, talked about what a new coach could look like for this team, and he didn't really lay down any hard-line traits about a new head coach that he would like to see. He seemed to be pretty open-minded, and this hire is reflective of that open-mindedness."
