The second-year guard targets a breakout campaign, leveraging Summer League feedback to transform into a defensive pest and reliable shooter under Orlando's new coaching staff.

Orlando Magic guard Jase Richardson is entering his second season prepared to take a major leap in the lineup.

For Richardson, this progression started during the summer, taking what he learned from his rookie season and growing on it.

Here’s what he had to say during media day:

A Productive Summer

Richardson said he had a productive summer between playing in Summer League, spending time with his family and continuing to work in the gym and weight room. He said the offseason felt longer than his rookie year, when the draft kept him busier, but he’s excited to get the upcoming season started.

Learning From His Rookie Season

Richardson said he learned a lot during his rookie season and is grateful for the experiences that came with it. Whether it was learning on the court or understanding what it takes to be a good teammate off the court, Richardson said there were plenty of positives and negatives he can take from his first season.

Now, he’s focused on implementing those lessons and continuing to learn as he enters his second season.

Using Summer League to Improve

Summer League also gave Richardson a better idea of what he needed to work on heading into the offseason. He said communicating with the coaching staff and understanding what they wanted from him helped shape his development.

After Summer League, Richardson received feedback from the staff on areas he needed to improve before training camp. He then incorporated those areas into his daily workouts throughout the rest of the summer.

Defining His Role

Richardson said the expectations from the new coaching staff align closely with what he already had in mind for himself entering the season.

He wants to become a defensive pest who can pressure opponents 94 feet and make things difficult on the ball. At the same time, he wants to become a reliable shooter and continue improving his ability to get into the paint and make the right play.

Those areas have remained a daily focus for Richardson, who said he continues to work on the fundamentals of his game, including passing and finishing at the rim against bigger defenders.
