Orlando dominates weaker teams and competes with the best, fueled by rising star Anthony Black's impressive scoring surge and versatile play.
The Orlando Magic have returned to expected form, establishing themselves as a legitimate contender in the Eastern Conference. Coming off a nail-biting win over the Portland Trail Blazers, the Magic have continued to take care of business against weaker opponents while remaining competitive against top teams. While some recent inconsistency led to a two-spot drop to No. 10 in ESPN’s latest power rankings, Orlando still ranks among the league’s top teams.
The Orlando Magic have returned to form as a top Eastern Conference contender. Despite a slight drop to No. 10 in ESPN’s latest power rankings, they continue to dominate weaker teams and compete with the league’s best. Rising star Anthony Black, averaging career highs of 14 points and 3.4 assists, is emerging as a key contributor and one of the NBA’s most promising young players.
“Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner and Jalen Suggs have proved, when healthy, how good and promising they can be. But one young Magic player who is rising with more minutes is Black,” ESPN Wrote. “Entering Tuesday's game at Portland, Black had scored in double figures in 15 of his previous 16 games. Black has stepped up with Wagner and Suggs currently sidelined, and his minutes and role also coincided with when Banchero was injured earlier this season.”
“Black's versatility has been big for the team this season with his ability to defend, score, pass and rebound,” the article added. “He averaged 13.8 points, 4.1 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.2 steals entering Tuesday and should still be a valuable contributor once Orlando is fully healthy again.”
Here is more on coach Jamahl Mosley's thoughts on his team from their 110-106 win over the Trail Blazers.
On Paolo Banchero taking only eight shots:
"Paulo's playing winning basketball and that's what he knows and what he does. He saw that Anthony Black had it going early and then Desmond got it going and then Taius had it going and he was just facilitating. Even you're calling plays for him and he's just making the right play, the right pass. Those are just the big keys of what he continues to do. He's about trying to find a way to win the game and that's what he did."
On Desmond Bane's defense and if it gets overlooked:
"It may. But I really do believe he takes on all challenges. He is such a doggish competitor that he's going to take on any challenge that you throw at him. Whoever his matchup is, he's trying to win that matchup. He's trying to find the right way to win the game. And that's what he will continue to do for us and for this team. He brings that toughness. He brings that leadership. Whatever challenge is on the platform, he's going to take it."
