The Orlando Magic’s offensive struggles continue to persist despite making several key offseason acquisitions aimed at improving their scoring and taking the next step toward contention. One of those moves, first-round pick Jase Richardson, was drafted for his offensive upside as a three-level scorer. Yet, the Magic have been hesitant to give him consistent minutes, limiting what he can offer to a team desperate for an offensive spark.
It’s understandable that as a rookie, Richardson needs time to adjust to the NBA’s pace and physicality. Still, he’s already shown a natural scoring instinct, whether it’s attacking the rim to draw contact or pulling up confidently off a screen. Those skills could be valuable when the offense stalls, especially when Desmond Bane or Jalen Suggs are off the floor.
Due to the limited opportunities for Richardson and other rookies, Bleacher Report recently gave the Magic’s draft class a C grade. The potential is clear, but until Orlando commits to developing its young talent, those flashes of promise may remain just that.
“The Orlando Magic are once again searching for offensive answers even after trading for Desmond Bane this offseason,” Bleacher Report wrote. “Thus far, Orlando has been reluctant to play Jase Richardson (No. 25 overall pick) or Noah Penda (No. 32) big minutes thus far despite the scoring upside both possess.”
“Richardson has only registered 21 total minutes across five games, making 1-of-4 shots and handing out four assists,” the article added. “Penda has put up 13 points, eight rebounds, five assists, two blocks and a steal in his 43 minutes over four games.”
On top of Richardson’s lack of minutes, second-round pick Noah Penda has also been waiting for his opportunity to shine. During Summer League play, Penda showcased his defensive versatility, proving capable of guarding all five positions. He also flashed strong playmaking ability out of the post. His combination of size, mobility, and vision makes him an intriguing fit for a Magic team still searching for consistent offensive flow and energy on the defensive end.
“The Magic look like a team that needs a consolidation trade at some point, as neither rookie is getting the run they'll need to grow.” Bleacher Report said
