After a sudden shoulder injury sidelined him in the preseason, the star forward details his recovery and readiness to lead Orlando’s new system against the Hawks.
The Orlando Magic will kick off their 2026-27 season by hosting the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday. Unfortunately for the Magic, the injury bug has already begun. In a short preseason stretch, Noah Penda, Anthony Black and Franz Wagner have already gotten banged up.
Franz Wagner ended up grabbing his right shoulder after a three-point attempt and ended up leaving afterward.
Prior to the season-opening game on Wednesday, Wagner spoke with the media on Tuesday about his recent injury and how he’s preparing for the season.
Here’s everything Wagner had to say at the availability:
His health and practice status ahead of opening night: Wagner said he fully participated in practice and felt good, providing a positive update on his health ahead of the season opener.
How the shoulder injury occurred against Miami: Wagner explained that he experienced a sharp pain in his shoulder after swiping down at the ball as an opposing player went up for a shot. He said the immediate discomfort made it clear that continuing to play was not the right decision.
The biggest takeaway for the team from preseason: Wagner emphasized that the preseason was primarily about adjusting to the team's new system and seeing how it translated to actual game situations. He said the experience allowed the team to work through challenges while building confidence in its execution, noting that there were several stretches where the team performed well.
Excitement for opening night: Wagner expressed excitement about finally beginning the regular season after spending an extended period preparing for the opportunity.
Adapting to Coach Sweeney's new principles and system: Wagner praised the team's effort in implementing Sweeney's new principles, highlighting the players' willingness to listen to the coaching staff and execute even when things do not work immediately. He added that seeing those habits translate to the court has provided additional motivation to continue improving.
What makes opening night at home special: Wagner pointed to the excitement surrounding a new season, particularly with a new coaching staff and opportunities for improvement. He said the team is eager to build on last season and begin a new chapter.
Motivation stemming from how recent seasons ended: Wagner acknowledged that the Magic have fallen short of their expectations over the past three seasons, leaving the team feeling as though it had not reached its full potential. He said that lingering disappointment serves as a major source of motivation heading into the new season.
