Orlando Magic head coach Sean Sweeney and Super Bowl-winning coach Jon Gruden recently discussed numerous topics concerning the Magic.
On Wednesday, the Orlando Magic will kick off their 2026-27 season by hosting the Atlanta Hawks, and Sean Sweeney's first year as the team's head coach will truly be underway.
Ahead of training camp, Sweeney sat down with a guy who knows what it's like to lead a team to winning a title in his first season at the helm: Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Jon Gruden.
Sweeney appeared as a guest on "Gruden Goes Long," and he started by talking about what his experience in Orlando has been like so far and why he chose the Magic. Since Sweeney's first press conference in June, his answer has remained the same. He was driven by ownership, the front office, the players, and the city.
Now, after a successful preseason slate in which the Magic went 3-1, Sweeney will have the chance to show the Magic faithful in full what kind of coach he is. As he told Gruden, his style is built on preparation, attention to detail, consistency, and competitiveness.
In coming to Orlando, after helping the San Antonio Spurs reach the NBA Finals in his lone season as the top assistant on Mitch Johnson's staff, Sweeney understands that the Magic are close, and it is up to him and his staff to help them take the next step.
For the Magic, nothing is going to come easy. The Eastern Conference grew much stronger in the offseason due to a high level of activity in free agency and on the trade block.
Orlando's first test against the Hawks is going to demonstrate how much competition is going to make up the Southeast Division. On the latest episode of the Full Court Magic podcast, I talked with my colleague and Miami Heat roundtable beat writer, Anthony Aguirre, about the type of challenge Atlanta will present:
"The Southeast Division has gotten better overall. I mean, the Hawks added two championship-stalwart defenders, Aaron Wiggins and Lou Dort, from Oklahoma City.
They're well coached. I think Quinn Snyder is good at his job. And I think that they do have a lot of good pieces. But, you know, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, as your arguable number one, is not necessarily the guy who’s going to carry you. But I do think that they're going to cause problems for both our teams when they face them."
Last season, the Hawks swept the Magic, 4-0, in the regular season series. Both teams have their differences coming into what will be a new slate, but Orlando must be prepared for what is ahead.
