From Seattle workouts to intensive two-a-days, the new assistant coach is cementing player buy-in through personalized development plans and a relentless commitment to rapport-building in Orlando.

On the latest episode of the Full Court Magic podcast, host Don Strouble recapped Orlando Magic's Media Day availability and discussed his observations on how Sean Sweeney is already building a strong culture:

"Last Monday, the Magic had media day at the Advent Health Training Center, and we got a lot of good stuff from a lot of good sources. So, many players took the podium to talk to us. President of basketball operations, Jeff Weltman. We heard from Sean Sweeney. It was a really great occasion and it kicks off one of my favorite times of year. Especially since I've been covering this team, this is a group that really has confirmed all the things that I was hoping for up to this point. Now, it's still very early, but I had noticed the buy-in from this team just from hearing offseason interviews from different players with different outlets. The way that coach Sweeney talked about reaching out to players when he first got the job, he's had a whole summer since then to really hone in on this rapport-building process and this relationship building with the players, and the buy-in is evident—not just from media day, but also from training camp. But I don't want to jump the gun too quickly."

"When I talk about that development, that brings me back to Sweeney and the rapport he's built with these players. The moment Sean Sweeney got the job, he called Paolo Banchero, and soon after they were meeting in Seattle and he was working alongside Paolo. They've maintained, according to Banchero, an open line of communication since then and all the way up to this point where they're spending every day with each other pretty much. The Magic opened training camp doing two-a-days for the first three days, then had a couple days of just singular practice, an off day, and right back at it on Sunday. This is the time of year where it's go, go, go. There's not going to be a break until next summer for this group, and that's how they prefer it. I believe that the relationships that Sweeney has built with not just Banchero, but with Desmond Bane... Bane said that him and Sweeney met and Sweeney outlined a development plan for him that Bane has been using during the offseason and coming into training camp to be a better version of himself.

"So Sweeney is creating this mutual belief where it's like, 'Hey, I believe in you and I know what you're capable of,' and in turn the players are believing in him. That's something that Sweeney praised. He said he doesn't have to push these guys in training camp, that they want to be competitive on their own and do the extra reps on their own. Now, it's just about trying to find that balance of, 'Okay, we're going to push ourselves physically, but also mentally, we're going to execute the right way, we're going to commit to that necessary verbal communication that is needed on the basketball court in a high-level setting.' I think that there is a good professional marriage happening here between Sweeney, his players, and the rest of the staff. It is super important that it started with the star players of this team in Paolo, Franz Wagner, Desmond, and then also Jalen Suggs."
