Beyond the viral highlights, the Magic star breaks down his elite offseason sessions with KD and how a new coaching connection is fueling his pursuit of dominance.

The Orlando Magic have set a new standard with the hiring of head coach Sean Sweeney. As the 16th head coach in franchise history, he is expected to elevate the Magic to new heights, including making a deep playoff run and potentially contending for an NBA Finals appearance.

During Media Day, forward Paolo Banchero spoke highly on Sweeney, assistant coach Shammgod, and his practice session with Paolo Banchero.

Entering his fifth season, Paolo Banchero believes he is primed for his best season yet and is ready to dominate.

Building a Relationship With Sweeney

Banchero said he had a productive summer, spending time with his family while continuing to work on his game. Once Sweeney was announced as the Magic’s new head coach, the two quickly began building a relationship.

Sweeney called Banchero shortly after taking the job, which caught the forward by surprise but immediately led to productive conversations. The two had several long discussions about basketball, expectations and what Banchero wanted moving forward.

Sweeney also traveled to Seattle to spend a few days working with Banchero, giving the two more time to get to know each other and discuss the direction of the team. Since then, Banchero said their communication has remained consistent, with Sweeney making his expectations clear while also asking Banchero what he wants from the upcoming season.

Banchero said he couldn’t ask for much more from a new head coach and is excited to begin the season alongside Sweeney.

Learning From Shammgod

Banchero also reflected on the impact former Magic assistant coach God Shammgod had on his development. He said Shammgod helped him both on and off the court, particularly through his communication and the experience he shared with Banchero during their time together.

Although Shammgod is no longer with the Magic, the two have remained in contact. Banchero said Shammgod even texted him that morning, showing the relationship they built during his time in Orlando has continued.

Banchero said he feels fortunate to have worked with Shammgod and believes there was plenty he could learn from his basketball knowledge and experience.

Working With Kevin Durant

Banchero also discussed his offseason workouts with Kevin Durant, clarifying that the widely circulated workout footage came from just one session where cameras happened to be present.

Banchero has worked with Durant before and said he enjoys learning from the veteran star. While the two have different playing styles and body types, Banchero said the biggest lesson he takes from Durant is the intensity he brings to every workout.

Banchero specifically pointed to Durant’s ability to make every repetition feel like game speed. Having the opportunity to work with Durant, receive advice and learn from his approach has been valuable for Banchero as he continues developing his own game.
