I really can't blame you if you forgot that the Dallas Mavericks have an All-Star point guard on their roster.
While Cooper Flagg and Naji Marshall are tasked with running the offense while two-way rookie Ryan Nembhard sits, D'Angelo Russell has missed the last ten games, all listed as "DNP - Coach's Decision."
Russell, a former All-Star, was expected to keep the team afloat while Kyrie Irving recovers from a torn ACL. However, other injuries, unfair expectations, and overall poor play have piled up, and the Mavericks don't really have a need for an aging point guard who is clearly not a part of their long-term future.
Luckily, another disappointing team might be interested in trading for him.
The Milwaukee Bucks are perhaps the busiest team this season, as they navigate superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo being "open" to a trade."
While they could fetch a massive haul for him, losing a franchise cornerstone doesn't tend to go over well with fans. Just ask the crowds at the American Airlines Center.
In an effort to keep Giannis happy and in town, the Bucks want to add proven veterans on reasonable contracts.
"The Bucks have discussed improving around the margins with several of their own veteran minimum players in differing trade talks to acquire higher-paid players who fit under their room below the luxury tax," reported HoopsHype's Michael Scotto.
Two of the names Milwaukee is interested in? Brooklyn's Cam Thomas and Dallas' D'Angelo Russell.
"Should Milwaukee acquire Russell, the Bucks would likely look to acquire second-round draft capital while offering Dallas salary relief towards the luxury tax this season and clearing Dallas of Russell’s player option for next season," Scotto added.
Milwaukee could package the expiring contracts of Amir Coffey and Cole Anthony to Dallas, although the Mavericks might look at Russell's recent minutes (there aren't any!) and just say, "Here, take him!"
Of course, NBA salary and trade rules would force the Mavericks to take a little something back, but given his ten straight DNPs, don't expect the front office to get all sentimental. And if the move keeps Giannis happy, expect the Bucks to be quick to pull the trigger.
