Terry Stotts is reportedly interested in interviewing for head coaching positions.
The Dallas Mavericks missed out on hiring a former assistant coach already this cycle as Sean Sweeney agreed to a deal with the Orlando Magic to become the team's new head man next season.
Dallas was rumored to be interested in Sweeney because he was thought of as the next clear-cut candidate to land a head position this offseason. He was a top assistant on Jason Kidd's Mavs staff for four seasons before taking an associate head coach job with the San Antonio Spurs, whose season could still end in a Finals win.
The Mavs and president Masai Ujiri have begun their search for Kidd's successor, and we've pinned multiple names that could be viable options - both from the college and professional ranks.
NBA insider Marc Stein and reporter Jake Fischer also name one who, like Sweeney, has ties back to the Mavericks.
The Stein Line reports that Golden State Warriors assistant coach Terry Stotts is expected to interview with Dallas. Stotts and fellow Warriors staffer Jerry Stackhouse (a former Mavs player) are not returning to their roles under Steve Kerr in the Bay next season.
Stotts has previous head-coaching stops at Atlanta, Milwaukee, and Portland. Stein says he is only interested in pursuing an opportunity to be a head coach in the near future.
The Mavs could make that happen ... and some leverage might be how Stotts was a part of the team's most iconic era.
Stotts was an assistant for Rick Carlisle in Dallas from 2008 to 2012, which included being a member of the 2011 NBA Championship team.
The Mavericks went 198-114 (.575) in the four years with Stotts on the bench. In each of the first three of those years, Dallas won at least 50 games, then the 2011-12 season brought a lockout that halted Stotts' last season with the team.
From there, he earned his third head coach gig, landing with the Trail Blazers and beginning his longest tenure as a head coach. Stotts was in Portland from 2012 to 2021 and had a record of 402-318 (.558). Since he departed from the Blazers, he took the Warriors job in 2024 after a three-year hiatus.
Overall, Stotts, 68, is 517-486 (.515) as an NBA head coach during the regular season. In the playoffs, his win percentage drops to 34.3 percent with a 23-44 record.
