Michael Porter Jr. continues to make the podcast rounds, and this time he had plenty to say. From Russell Westbrook and MVPs to relationships and his own NBA journey, MPJ once again gave fans an unfiltered look at his personality.
Michael Porter Jr. continues to make the podcast rounds, and at this point, it is clear the Brooklyn Nets forward has no problem sitting down and talking about just about anything.
After recently having Sky Bri on his own Curious Mike podcast, Porter Jr. reunited with her for what felt like a part two, this time appearing on Steiny’s podcast alongside Bri. The conversation covered relationships, social media, NBA hypotheticals, Russell Westbrook, his path to the NBA, and plenty of topics that had nothing to do with basketball.
One of the more personal parts of the conversation came when Porter Jr. was asked about his last relationship and why it ended.
Porter explained that the relationship started during the honeymoon phase, with the two traveling around the world and having a great time together. Once they returned to normal life, however, they realized they were looking for different things and had different goals.
“We were two completely different people looking for different things,” Porter said.
The conversation then shifted toward what Porter is looking for in a partner. He said that, looks-wise, he does not really have a specific type, but personality is much more important to him.
Porter said he wants someone who is “cool and chill,” easy to talk to, shares a relationship with God, and wants to have a family.
The three also got into a broader conversation about relationships and expectations between men and women, including Porter clarifying an old comment about splitting rent. He explained that his comments were taken differently than he intended and that he was referring to wanting to take care of his partner rather than suggesting a traditional 50/50 arrangement.
Eventually, the conversation turned back toward basketball.
Porter was asked whether winning an MVP could mean more than winning a championship. Having already won a title, he said he could understand why an individual might value an MVP, particularly if they were a role player on a championship team. He also brought up Russell Westbrook as someone he would be interested in asking about the question.
That led to Porter reflecting on Westbrook following the veteran guard's retirement. Porter spoke highly of his former teammate, praising his work ethic and the way he took care of his body throughout his career.
Porter also named Brandon Roy and Greg Oden when asked which player had the most potential to have a much bigger career if injuries had not gotten in the way. He acknowledged Derrick Rose as another obvious name, particularly considering Rose won an MVP before his injuries changed the trajectory of his career.
Another interesting part of the conversation came when Porter discussed his own journey to the NBA. He said he knew from seventh or eighth grade that he was going to make the league and admitted he essentially had no Plan B.
Despite achieving that dream, Porter said he did not feel like he had truly “made it” until he was able to buy a house and help his family.
Bri had a different answer, saying she would feel like she had truly made it when she was married with her first child.
The podcast appearance was another example of why Porter continues to be an interesting guest away from the basketball court. He is willing to talk about his career, relationships, faith, social media, and his personal beliefs without appearing overly concerned about how every answer will be received.
One comment under the interview summed it up well: “MPJ is way too real for this! Love how authentic and unbothered he is throughout the whole interview.”
That authenticity can work both ways. Porter is clearly comfortable being himself, for better or for worse, and he has shown time and time again that he is willing to share opinions that can create headlines. With Porter continuing to make the podcast rounds, it is probably safe to assume this will not be the last time he gives fans plenty to talk about.
