With two second-round picks, Brooklyn could target Kentucky’s high-flying combo guard. Explore how Oweh’s explosive scoring and clutch postseason performances make him a high-upside draft sleeper.
The Brooklyn Nets have multiple opportunities to strike gold in the second round, possessing the No. 33 and 43 overall picks in this year's draft.
Recently, we have covered some of the more "hidden gem" prospects at KingsRoundtable, including Florida State's Chauncey Wiggins and Illinois' Kylan Boswell.
In this profile, I will highlight Kentucky combo guard Otega Oweh, who's 1,255 points as a Wildcat are the most points by a player in his first two seasons at Kentucky.
March Hero
Although Kentucky did not live up to preseason hype, Oweh made certain the Wildcats advanced past the Round of 64, scoring a career-high 35 points in the Wildcats' first round matchup against Santa Clara.
After a go-ahead 3-pointer from Allen Graves with less than three seconds to play, Oweh quickly got down the court, pulling up from just over half court and banking in the equalizer.
Oweh added six points in the overtime period, helping lead Kentucky to an 89-84 comeback victory.
In the following round, Oweh had another strong performance, scoring an efficient 18 points while hauling in eight rebounds.
3-Level Scorer
Oweh can score from nearly anywhere on the court, combining strong finishes at the rim with fluid pull-ups from the midrange.
The 6-foot-4 senior also made 1.3 deep balls per game, a career-high.
Oweh is explosive as a driver, using a quick first step and acrobatic adjustments to get to the rim and score.
The SEC veteran also possesses high-flying finishes, postering defenders at the pinnacle.
Oweh also did a good job getting to the charity stripe, knocking down over four per game.
Areas For Improvement
Oweh needs to continue to work on his 3-point shot, as he shot just 33.3-percent from beyond the arc.
As far as jump shot mechanics go, Oweh has a good base and release point, but sometimes catches a hitch.
Oweh also shot a lot more 3-pointers this season, attempting a career-most 3.8 per contest.
With Oweh's ability to get to the free-throw line, he should also work on getting more consistent, shooting just 73.3-percent last season.
Draft Projection
Oweh is currently listed as the No. 57 overall prospect in the class, according to ESPN's big board.
Expect the high-flying senior to be looked at towards the end of the second round or as a high-priority UDFA.
Are Nets a Fit?
If Brooklyn could lock down Oweh on a two-way deal, his upside and athletic ability would provide a lift to the Nets' offense and rebounding effort.
