After a second round sweep and playoff exit, the Lakers enter a pivotal offseason headlined by LeBron's retirement decision.

It’s no secret that the Los Angeles Lakers want Lebron James back, but the question is whether he wants to return for a 24th NBA season after their playoff exit. James spoke following the loss and said that he plans to “recalibrate” with family before making his decision on whether to retire or to return as he enters unrestricted free agency. Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka acknowledged that while they might want James, so would “any team” in the league as he finishes up his eighth year in Los Angeles.

It’s the longest time James has spent with any organization in his tenure, and the Lakers plan to be patient while he thinks over his NBA future. While they'll give him time and space, the entire core of the Lakers stands to be affected this offseason as Austin Reaves will also enter free agency. Pelinka and coach JJ Redick have both publicly voiced a desire for him to return. Pelinks feels like the trio of James, Reaves, and Luka Doncic is akin to having "three quarterbacks,” which is certainly a two-sided coin they’re seeing the other side of now.

To read more about the future of the franchise and what James plans to consider, here is the full story from Lakers Roundtable writer Jeremy Lambert.

Los Angeles has more decisions to make past those two, but their decisions will shape the identity of this team and the players around them. Redick has said that he wants to build a deeper bench and see an improvement on defense, as the franchise was 20th in the league in that metric through the regular season. But they’ll need to build the roster out to do so, and that’ll hinge largely on their stars.
