Jamal Murray has had a brief international career, representing his native Team Canada in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, though Canada didn't find it's way to the podium in those games.

However, it looks like Murray won't be representing his country in international play anytime soon according to a recent report.

It was announced in a report by Vivek Jacob that Murray won't play for Team Canada in either the 2027 FIBA World Cup or the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics because he wasn't able to make the three-year commitment that Team Canada requires from it's player to compete in high-level international tournaments.

The three-year policy came about after Team Canada failed to qualify at all for the Tokyo Olympics, the fifth-straight Olympics that the nation failed to qualify for in men's basketball, and Team Canada and Philadelphia 76ers head coach Nick Nurse for a desire for continuity on the roster.

Nurse's complaints were rooted in the fact that he couldn't field together a consistent international roster with so many players coming and going and so the three-year policy was devised ahead of the 2024 games, with Murray making the commitment at that time. 

The commitment dictates that the players who make the agreement compete in all major international competitions that take place outside of the NBA season and even if they're injured and can't compete, they still must show up and support. 

Murray made the commitment the first time around, leading to his 2024 Olympics performance where he played in three games and averaged 5.7 points, 2.3 rebounds and 4.7 assists in 19.3 minutes per game while shooting 33.3% from the field, but he clearly didn't make the commitment this time. 

There was no exact reason given as to why Murray couldn't make the commitment, but there are a number of factors that could have informed his decision. 

For one, the Denver Nuggets just suffered a first-round exit in the playoffs in an upset against the Minnesota Timberwolves and even though Murray played his most game in a season since 2018-19, his past injury history coupled with the Nuggets' unceremonious end may lead him to focus on NBA success. 

Murray will also be looking ahead to free agency in the future. He still has three more years left on his current contract with Denver, but he's due to be a universal free agent in the summer of 2030 and he may not want to take the risk of injuring himself in an international tournament while trying to improve his resume for a future contract.

It's definitely a loss for Team Canada as Murray is coming off of the best season of his career by far, but their roster at this point still looks solid with players like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and RJ Barrett having made the three-year commitment.
