What could go right and wrong for the Nuggets in 2026?
Even though the Denver Nuggets have had some salary cap issues and need to avoid paying the luxury tax, they have had a quiet offseason and have kept essentially the same roster this summer.
Another major part of the Nuggets' offseason has been the ongoing negotiations between them and restricted free agent guard Peyton Watson. Watson, 23, is coming off a breakout year where he averaged 14.6 points per game over 54 games played.
Watson is looking for a long-term extension, but the Nuggets have to find a way to pay him while staying under the second apron. Because of the salary cap concerns, a potential sign-and-trade could occur, as multiple teams have been reported to be interested in pursuing Watson.

The roster was simply not good enough to win the championship. Denver has elected to bring most players from last season back up to this point in the offseason, and it has left their fans with many questions.
Nuggets' Worst Case Scenario
While the Nuggets have a very talented roster, there are many things that can go wrong. For starters, the franchise could have to pay the luxury tax, which is over $200 million.
In terms of what could happen on the court, the worst-case scenario for the Nuggets is another first-round exit. This is worse than Denver having a losing season and getting a lottery pick because the Nuggets would essentially stay in the same place again.
Courtesy of Ron ChenoyA first-round exit would give them a draft pick that wouldn't be valuable, and it could force them to make a major move that could give them a higher draft pick. The last thing the Nuggets want as a franchise is to stay stagnant, especially with Nikola Jokic playing at the top of his game.
Nuggets' Best Case Scenario
The best-case scenario for the Nuggets this season is an NBA Championship. With the roster they have, it is still possible as long as they have Nikola Jokic. If the Nuggets are off to a hot start, they could find themselves in a position to possibly trade for a star player at the deadline.
If the Nuggets can find a way to make a major acquisition that will get them over the hump, it would boost the team morale all around. One of the concerns with the Nuggets last season was Jokic's frustration with how the roster performed in the postseason.
