The Detroit Pistons (4-1) are set to square off with the Brooklyn Nets (0-4) to kick off NBA Cup Play on Friday night
After a five-game opening stretch, the Detroit Pistons are ready to begin their NBA Cup journey with tonight’s 7:30 pm tip-off against the Brooklyn Nets, a squad that is very much in need of a win.
So far, the Pistons have been on a tear to start the 2026-27 campaign with a 4-1 record courtesy of some hot three-point shooting. During the offseason, Detroit made a concerted effort to become a more dangerous squad from downtown, so the early results would indicate this iteration of the Pistons has a bit more balance than last year’s group.
On the other side of this Eastern Conference matchup, the Nets are still looking for the first win of the season. Now that the NBA has removed much of the incentive to tanking, the Nets should be attempting to put a winning basketball team together, but they have floundered to a winless 0-4 start thus far. In fairness, the Nets have faced a contingent of quality opponents so far with the Boston Celtics, Indiana Pacers, Cleveland Cavaliers and Charlotte Hornets still in their rear view mirror, so Brooklyn will be pushing hard for their first win tonight.
From a health standpoint, the Pistons are slowly adding players back to the lineup after what felt like an injury-riddled start. Now, All-Star center Jalen Duren still needs another week before he will be reevaluated with regards to his strained hamstring, but the Pistons have been able to lean on Paul Reed during JD’s absence.
As for Isaiah Joe, the Detroit shooting guard took a hard spill near the baseline after throwing down a huge dunk in transition against the Philadelphia 76ers. Joe was slow to get up from the fall, and the long-range marksman never returned to the contest. But after missing the last two games due to a hip contusion, Joe could be back in the rotation tonight since he’s been upgraded to a questionable designation, which essentially functions as a game-time decision for the Pistons.
Since Detroit added shooters in the summer and has shot the ball so well to start the season, the Pistons could get by without Joe for another game, but the Arkansas product is likely still eager to build some chemistry with his new teammates. So far, Joe played intermittently during the pre-season and was attempting to get his feet wet before suffering this hip injury, so the veteran sniper would prefer to get some early-season reps if at all possible.
Switching to the Nets’ side, Brooklyn is managing a couple injuries heading into tonight’s contest as well. Forward Noah Clowney is currently battling an illness and was downgraded to questionable for tonight, so the Nets could be without a key piece of their frontcourt. Similarly, forward Tyler Bilodeau is out with a shoulder injury, so Brooklyn will have to shift around a few low post players during the NBA Cup battle.
After tonight’s game wraps up, the Pistons will have three more NBA Cup Group Play opportunities to punch their ticket to the next round of the in-season tournament, but tonight’s matchup could lay the groundwork for a memorable cup run for the Motown franchise.
