The Detroit Pistons were selected to take part in the NBA’s very first matchup of the 2026-27 regular season
Last week, the NBA broke their offseason silence by releasing the full 2026-27 regular season schedule to the public, and the league did so in a way that made it easy to draw a few important conclusions.
With regards to the Detroit Pistons, there was a faction of the fan base that felt the team was forgotten about and left without a game on Christmas Day after winning 60 games last season and earning the top spot in the East. Many of the sport’s top franchises like the Los Angeles Lakers and Philadelphia 76ers are involved on Christmas Day but not the Pistons. While true, that is a small snapshot of the schedule that does not take into consideration the high-leverage positions that the NBA set up for the Pistons this year.
On Opening Day, the league has the Pistons set to host the Boston Celtics for a rematch between the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds in the Eastern Conference to kick off the NBA’s campaign. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 pm since the league has a triple-header on the books, and that time slot is actually another important piece of information.
Though a 3 pm start time on a weekday may appear a bit peculiar, it allows for the Pistons and Celtics game to hit the European market smack dab in the middle of prime time on NBC. Although the NBA is far from the continent’s top spot, the league has been trying to make inroads in Europe for the past several seasons, and a Pistons-Celtics meeting is a historic clash that foreign fans can sink their teeth into with the added allure of a storied rivalry between the squads.
Last season, the Pistons participated in a game south of the border in Mexico City where the international audience had a chance to consume some Detroit basketball against the Dallas Mavericks, so the franchise has had some worldwide exposure as of late. However, a regular season game on foreign soil for the 2026-27 campaign would have given the Pistons an opportunity to parlay all their success last year into a new market that could grow with Detroit, so an abroad game would have checked all the boxes from a Motown marketing perspective.
Still, the Pistons will just have to take advantage of their European-tailored tip-off time for the first game of the season against the Celtics. Both squads have young star players in Cade Cunningham and Jayson Tatum that can galvanize an international fan base, but it’s the supporting cast that really has an opportunity to turn heads on Opening Day. Both Jalen Duren and Ausar Thompson are still young, developing players who have not been exposed to the average international fan just yet, so the stateside matinee first game could be an important introduction for the pair of budding Motor City stars.
Last year, the Pistons picked up a 3-1 win in the season series against the Celtics, though both rosters have undergone a significant amount of turnover in the time since then. Naturally, the first game of the season will also provide the first look at live-action regular season minutes for a Pistons team that welcomed a handful of new faces over the offseason while Paul George takes part in his Boston debut at the same time.
