NBA Free Agency: What Should Detroit Pistons Do With Jalen Duren Situation?

Ever since free agency began after the 2026 NBA Draft, the Detroit Pistons have been at a relative stalemate with All-Star center Jalen Duren. Based on most reports, Duren is looking to receive a contract in the ballpark of a max deal, which could be 25% of the salary or even more since he qualified for a supermax after being selected to the All-NBA Third Team. 

However, Duren’s production took a stark drop-off in the postseason against the Orlando Magic and the Cleveland Cavaliers, and that fact is weighing down Duren’s value on the open market. Initially, Duren held meetings with both the Sacramento Kings and the Los Angeles Lakers on the first day of free agency, but nothing materialized on those fronts, which puts JD’s in limbo since the Pistons hold all the cards at the moment. 

If Duren inks a deal with another squad, the Pistons have the leverage in the sense that they can match any deal out there, so they are not necessarily in a position to advance aggressively until they can reach an agreement with the All-Star’s representation. On the other hand, Duren has been rumored to pursue a sign-and-trade with another organization, but the Pistons have no obligation to honor that request if that is in fact what JD wants. And even if they do come to terms with the possibility that Duren would like out of the Motor City, nobody or no team can force the Detroit brass to deal away their 22-year old All-Star center unless they feel that they are receiving fair compensation in return. 

So, the prevailing notion is that the Pistons should continue to wait out this staring contest until Duren comes to terms with the fact that his best option at the moment is to continue his career with the Pistons. Detroit has viewed Duren as a young pillar of their franchise, one that is worthy to build around alongside Cade Cunningham, for quite some time now. Head coach J.B. Bickerstaff echoed those sentiments during the team’s seven-game loss to the Cavs in the second round and mentioned that they wanted to do what was right for Duren long-term by leaving him in the starting lineup since ejecting him from the first five could stunt his confidence moving forward. S

With that context underscoring the current contract negotiation with Duren, it would be wise for the Pistons to sit tight for the time being. There are few— if any— teams remaining who have the cap space to sign Duren at this point in free agency, so Detroit’s position is even stronger than it was two weeks ago. Now, it remains to be seen whether Duren will ultimately receive a contract in the $35 million or $40 million per year range with the big man obviously preferring the latter, but that question will come into focus sooner rather than later. The Pistons have the space to sign Duren to an Average Annual Value of either amount after completing a six-team trade that shipped Caris LeVert, Marcus Sasser and Isaiah Stewart to other destinations, so money is not a huge issue for Detroit at the moment. They can sign JD to a deal worth either amount, but it would behoove the organization to try and ink Duren to a team-friendly contract without souring the relationship to the point that the center demands a trade as soon as he faced future adversity in the Motor City— if he does.
