Even After Finals Apperance, San Antonio Spurs Are 'Building'

The San Antonio Spurs have started their season 1-2, at times looking lost on the court. However, they've repeated over and over that they have a long season ahead of them, and they aren't worried about getting back on track.

The San Antonio Spurs are 1-2 to start the season, oftentimes playing with what appears to be a championship hangover, although no banner hangs in the Frost Bank Center to suggest that they deserve a break.

Instead, any of their shortcomings can be blamed on a simple lack of effort or suboptimal rotations. After marching through the Western Conference last season, the Spurs made the head-scratching move to alter their starting lineup, despite every player returning to the roster.

At the end of the day, though, players can't blame the coaches. They're responsible for the on-court results, ultimately, and no one is harsher on himself than Victor Wembanyama.

Victor Wembanyama Promises Spurs' Improvement

So far this season, Wembanyama is averaging 20 points, 11 rebounds, and four blocks. His scoring efficiency, though, is at an all-time low. Through three games, he's shooting only 36.5 percent from the field, often settling for 3-pointers or off-balance layups instead of attacking the basket with conviction.

In Saturday's win over the Dallas Mavericks, he appeared to right the ship, but he knows that he has a long way to go.

"It's normal that we're not as good as when we were deep into the playoffs," offered Wembanyama. "But it's not normal that not better than been so far, at least in the first two games. And I would say we have to trust the process and keep the big picture in mind. We're building right now. This is what the regular season is for. We're building. We're fighting. So each game matters. That's the sign of great teams."

Originally predicted to match their win total from last season, the reality is that the regular season doesn't matter too much to the Spurs. They could finish as the fifth seed and then run through the postseason en route to the Finals, and fans would celebrate that.

However, it's hard to instill confidence in your team when no one is playing up to par. Expect the Spurs to improve over the next few games and eventually find their form, but for now, any criticisms of the team are valid, and Wembanyama is on the same page as the fans.
