Spurs Pick Up Key Win Over Mavericks and Make Lasting Lineup Decision

The San Antonio Spurs beat the Dallas Mavericks on Saturday night, with Victor Wembanyama finally looking like his best self. As they continue to tinker with the lineup, expect the Spurs to embrace a key young player as a rotational piece.

The San Antonio Spurs picked up their first win of the season over the Dallas Mavericks on Saturday night, winning 122-106.

Cooper Flagg didn't suit up for Dallas after going down with a shoulder injury on Friday, although the Mavericks still looked like a much-improved team from the last two seasons. The Spurs, though, finally got back to form, it seemed, with Victor Wembanyama playing aggressively and well in the paint on offense.

“We will show our message on the court,” promised Wembanyama after Friday's loss to the Houston Rockets, sending a warning to the Mavericks and any future opponents.

It's safe to say that he lived up to that prediction.

Wembanyama led the way for the Spurs, finishing with 23 points, seven rebounds, and five "stocks." He shot only two-for-six from 3-point range, although he managed to get it going down low, finishing at the rim with ease, both off the dribble and after catching lobs.

Speaking of the Spurs' paint presence, Luke Kornet finished with a plus/minus of -18. He struggled in the first two games of the season, and it appeared that Mitch Johnson had seen enough. After Kornet failed to keep the Spurs afloat in non-Wemby minutes, Johnson sent Tarris Reed out to make his debut in the fourth quarter.

Reed finished with two points and three boards in just six minutes, flashing some upside as a long-term backup for Wembanyama. Expect him to get more run in the future. Kornet is a more-than-capable backup, although Reed's upside and ability to generate second-chance points give him an advantage, and he shouldn't be restricted to the end of the bench for much longer.

The Spurs weren't the only team that enjoyed solid play from a rookie. Sergio de Larrea, the 25th overall pick, led Dallas with 21 points off the bench. Between him, Morez Johnson, and Flagg, the Mavs have a bright future, although they are clearly not on the Spurs' level just yet.

While the three-point-guard starting lineup continued to have some growing pains, Stephon Castle, De'Aaron Fox, and Dylan Harper all managed to play to their strengths, getting the ball moving quickly in transition, attacking the rim, and finding Wemby in advantageous positions.

For the first time all season, the Spurs played the way they were expected to. It was a sight for sore eyes, and hopefully they've managed to knock the rust off.
