Victor Wembanyama is the runaway favorite to achieve one of the NBA's rarest feats, although Josh Giddey has come close to sneakily beating Wemby to the mark.
As soon as the San Antonio Spurs drafted Victor Wembanyama first overall in the 2023 NBA Draft, sports writers around the world started speculating about one statistical feat.
"Can Wemby be the first player since 1994 to record a quadruple-double?"
Only four players in NBA history have ever recorded ten points, ten rebounds, ten assists, and ten blocks or steals. Nate Thurmond, Alvin Robertson, Hakeem Olajuwon, and David Robinson. Of course, Robertson and Robinson were both playing for the Spurs when they achieved their feat. Plus, Tim Duncan did block ten shots in Game 6 of the 2003 NBA Finals, although he was only credited for eight.
The Spurs have a rich history of recording quadruple-doubles, although one overlooked player could beat Wemby to the punch.
Josh Giddey Is Wemby's Biggest Rival
Josh Giddey and Wembanyama are nowhere near each other. One is a generational talent who is transforming the game, and the other is just a solid starter. Still, as an oversized, pass-first point guard, it's not uncommon for him to get a triple-double. He had 13 last season.
All he needs is an elite defensive perfoamnce on top of it. Stranger things have happened.
"Josh Giddey has come the closest of anyone in the modern game," wrote Eoin Morris. "In a 146-115 Bulls win at the Lakers in March 2025, he finished with 15 points, 17 assists, 10 rebounds and eight steals."
Wembanyama was five assists shy of a quadruple-double in the postseason, and in his rookie year, finished a game against the Nuggets with 23 points, 15 rebounds, nine blocks, and eight assists.
"Victor Wembanyama is the better bet, and he has come close," Morris conceded. "The 2026 Defensive Player of the Year swats shots at a rate nobody else in the league. If a fifth one is coming, it is hard to see it belonging to anyone else."
The thing holding Wembanyama back is assists and minutes. Ten points, ten rebounds, and ten blocks are pretty easy for him, or at least easier than it would be for anyone else in the NBA. He's a solid passer, but he's not looking to rack up dimes.
On top of that, he averages less than 30 minutes per game. Getting 10 assists in 29 minutes as a center is a massive task.
Players like Giddey, Wemby, Luka Doncic, Nikola Jokic, and Anthony Edwards have the playstyle and skillset to make it happen, but one factor can't be overlooked: luck.
Your opponent has to make some bad passes. Missed shots have to fall in your lap. Your teammates can't miss when you pass to them. For a quadruple-double, everything has to be perfect. Rarely is it.
