Keldon Johnson could have been offered an extension this summer by the San Antonio Spurs, but wasn't. From the outside looking in, he seems to have a fractured relationship with the team, but that's far from the truth.
Keldon Johnson can't escape NBA trade rumors. Early in his career, he quickly established himself as an excellent offensive threat who could both rebound and space the floor. As the San Antonio Spurs improved, though, Johnson's efficiency and role both took a hit.
As a result, he's been swept up by trade talks, although so far, nothing has materialized. Last season, he seemed to cement himself as a key bench piece for the Spurs, and then disappeared in the postseason. As a result, he's back in the rumor mill.
Adding fuel to the fire is the Spurs' lack of commitment to him. He's in the last year of his contract and could have been extended this summer. Instead, he seems poised for unrestricted free agency in 2027.
Keldon Johnson Must Follow Victor Wembanyama's Lead
As if Victor Wembanyama couldn't get more popular in San Antonio! This summer, in his first contract negotiations, he left $50 million on the table, giving the Spurs plenty of financial flexibility.
Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper are expected to follow Wemby's example, but the player with the most to gain from also taking less is Johnson. If he wants to chase a massive contract, chances are a contender won't be willing to offer him one. Plus, if he wants to play for a winning team, playing in San Antonio just makes the most sense.
Johnson, at this point, is not worth the $17.5 million the Spurs owe him this season. His next contract will be much less lucrative, but if he's willing to remain on the bench, provide energy and physicality, and remain in Texas, then a low-value, long-term guaranteed contract might be his best bet.
Despite some frustrating mistakes on the court, Johnson is a fan favorite. The same fans who include him in trade machine fodder are posting videos of him hyping up the team in the locker room. Ask any Spur who their favorite teammate is, and Johnson is a common answer.
Is the center piece on a title team? Nope, but can he be a key factor off the Spurs' bench and bring some depth and life? Certainly!
The Spurs are expected to run the NBA for the next several seasons. If Johnson can survive their rebuild and be on the roster when times are tough, withstand that, and help them raise a banner, then fans will be quick to flock to him, no matter what his role is.
