The San Antonio Spurs are at the center of their fair share of NBA trade rumors, and one veteran and former All-Star has been listed as a possible target.
After their ugly 4-1 NBA Finals loss to the New York Knicks, the San Antonio Spurs are mostly expected to run things back with their current core.
The team can reasonably expect improvements from Victor Wembanyama, Stephon Castle, and Dylan Harper, so the franchise is in good hands. However, they have been linked to some premier trade targets.
Notable names like Aaron Gordon, John Collins, and even Kawhi Leonard have been floated as possible additions. The Spurs need a playmaking wing defender to pair with Wembanyama in the frontcourt, and all of those players fit the bill.
However, one accomplished veteran--well past his prime--does not. That doesn't mean the Spurs haven't shown some degree of interest.
Spurs Rumored to Be Interested in Klay Thompson
Klay Thompson does not fit the Spurs' immediate needs, but adding a four-time champ who is still one of the better shooters in the NBA can't hurt.
When the Dallas Mavericks added Thompson, they expected to go on another Finals run behind Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. Thompson was supposed to be the missing piece. Instead, they traded away Doncic, kicking off a rebuild.
Thompson simply has no place within Dallas' current timeline, and while his trade value is lower than ever, he is still a solid rotation player.
"While the Mavericks are not going to get back a hefty return for veteran Klay Thompson, who played only 21.7 minutes per game last season, there are enough contender-types sniffing around that the Mavs have some hope of landing draft capital for him," wrote Heavy's Sean Deveney. "Thompson is 36 but shot 38 percent from the 3-point line last year and has one year and $17 million left on his contract. The Pistons, Spurs, and Blazers are said to be among the interested teams."
The Pistons and Blazers both play hard-nosed basketball and are a floor-spacer away from taking the next step. The Spurs, meanwhile, have shooters, but could outbid either Detroit or Portland for Thompson, if they really wanted to.
The only question: do they really want to?
His skill set and history are obvious, but the Spurs shouldn't make moves based on a player's past. Unless they can get him for minimal draft capital and a matching salary, then their priorities are better spent elsewhere.
