The San Antonio Spurs toppled the Portland Trail Blazers on Saturday night, coming out of the gate swinging in the second half of a back-to-back.
The San Antonio Spurs extended their winning streak to eight games in a row, beating the Portland Trail Blazers on Saturday night, 125-103.
It was the first time in their winning streak that the Spurs played a quality opponent. The Minnesota Timberwolves were fresh off losing Anthony Edwards to injury when San Antonio beat them, but the Blazers headed into the game with only two losses.
With a marquee win finally under their belt despite having a game in Sacramento late the night before, the Spurs should have more momentum than ever.
Spurs' Defense Suffocates Blazers
Heading into the game, Portland was ranked second in the entire league in offensive rating. Against the Spurs, the Blazers missed close shots at the rim multiple times and shot only 25.7 percent from 3-point range.
The Spurs' defense, especially on the perimeter, was the highlight of the game. They were quick to turn their defense into offense, running the fast break so quickly that head coach Mitch Johnson even called a timeout, negating a Dylan Harper breakaway in the third quarter. Thankfully, those two points didn't really matter.
The Spurs were led by 29 points and seven rebounds from Victor Wembanyama. After rolling his ankle in each of the last two games, Wemby was seen clutching both his thigh and face at various points in this game, although he did not have to play at all in the fourth quarter, finishing with only 24 minutes.
Both Tarris Reed and Carter Bryant got extended run, with Bryant playing multiple minutes and hitting multiple shots in the first half. Reed, meanwhile, had to wait until the fourth quarter to get into the game, but finished with two points and three rebounds in nine minutes. Johnson has been urged to play Reed more than he has, and perhaps Saturday's showing will hammer home that point.
Every player on the Blazers struggled to get going. Portland was led by a lackluster 15 points from Deni Avdija, allowing the Spurs to build a 15-point halftime lead and extend it to well over 30 points by the end of the third quarter.
With some wind in their sails, the Spurs will have Sunday off before taking on the Suns in Phoenix.
