The San Antonio Spurs have been listed as an ideal landing spot for LeBron James, and they have an advantage over any other would-be suitors.
This offseason, even after drafting Jaden Quaintance 20th overall out of Kentucky, the San Antonio Spurs need a power forward to pair with Victor Wembanyama.
As soon as the season ended, the Spurs were linked to LeBron James. He will be a free agent and likely only wants to play one more season before he retires. Both on the court and off, San Antonio is a perfect fit.
Of course, getting him there will be hard, as he will have more than his fair share of suitors, but the Spurs can offer a "fun" sales pitch.
Why Spurs Should Try to Lure LeBron James
James will turn 42 years old next season, which should give some teams pause. He is no longer the franchise centerpiece he once was, and even his All-Star talent is fading.
Still, he averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 7.2 assists per game last season on decent efficiency. His 3-point shooting took a dive to just 31.7 percent, but there's no reason to think that he can't get the shot back.
On paper, a player who can average 20 points and help facilitate the offense is exactly the type of player the Spurs need.
"The most fun team for him to go to is San Antonio," declared The Ringer's Bill Simmons. "San Antonio, he solves actual issues for them and could actually win the title with them. You could sell that really fast. 'Pop is there, I've had a long relationship with him. This team is close, I could be the missing piece. I watched them in the finals for five games, they were missing that one veteran leader.' I really liked the idea of him on that team. And I wouldn't consider it a ring chase because if I were him, I would want to keep playing. He's still really good."
The Spurs have room to pay James, and by the time he retires, Victor Wembanyama will be making maximum money, and Stephon Castle will be due for his extension, so the timing of it all works out.
"San Antonio kind of needs him," Simmons finished.
Behind Wembanyama, Dylan Harper, and perhaps even De'Aaron Fox, James would be the fourth option on offense. He is no longer an All-Defensive talent, but he's solid on that end, especially when his team is competing.
Would he want to ride off trying to win one last ring in Texas? The money makes sense, and the on-court fit is incredibly apparent.
