The San Antonio Spurs drafted Jayden Quaintance 20th overall in the 2026 NBA Draft despite very valid injury concerns. With a long road before he's 100 percent healthy, the Spurs are expected to take a conservative approach with their prized rookie.
With the 20th overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, the San Antonio Spurs selected Kentucky's Jayden Quaintance, who could end up being one of the steals of the draft.
Quaintance is a raw athlete and showed flashes of elite talent on the defensive end during his two college seasons, although a torn ACL and meniscus slowed him down considerably, limiting him to just four games in his final season with the Wildcats.
All signs point to him sitting out for at least six months as he undergoes surgery to totally repair his knee. In theory, he could play right now, although the Spurs would like to be cautious, opting to preserve his long-term health.
While it might be a while before fans see him in action, Quaintance is excited to get to work, especially with Victor Wembanyama.

Quaintance Previews Spurs' Prowess
In preseason mock drafts, Quaintance was slated to go in the top ten, although the injuries tanked his draft stock. The Spurs are in dire need of a bruising power forward to pair with Wembanyama down low, and while their draft pick might not be a starter in his rookie season, he brings a much-needed skillset to San Antonio.
"I feel like we'll really be able to shrink the floor and make it really hard to score on the paint," he said of playing with Wemby. "Also, being able to, again, close out and guard those other positions, use our long wing spans to our advantage, I feel like it'll be a great combination."
If he and the team opt for the surgical recovery, fans can expect him to make his debut in December, ramping up to be an impact player in the postseason.
"Their priority is making sure that I'm 100 percent and fully healthy," he outlined. "So, I'm just trusting the medical staff here that they're going to put me in the best position to be successful."
Quaintance made it clear that no concrete decision has been made on if he will play in the Summer League or not, although fans shouldn't expect him to be spotted on the court much this offseason.
While it might take him a while to integrate into the lineup and hammer out a role, the Spurs are clearly trying to impose size on both ends of the floor, and if Quaintance lives up to the hype and his potential, the Spurs landed a key rotation player late in the first round.
