Victor Wembanyama Offers Update After Injury Scare
Nov 5, 2026 3:36 PM

Victor Wembanyama had the best game of his career on Wednesday night, and he shook off an ankle injury in the fourth quarter to remain in the game.

Early in the fourth quarter against the Dallas Mavericks, the San Antonio Spurs were holding their breath.

The Mavericks were rallying and would eventually take the lead after trailing by 19 points. Victor Wembanyama, who was in the midst of the best game of his career, went down with a rolled ankle. He seemed fine, but still exited the game for a few minutes.

His left ankle turned over on Walter Clayton's foot, landing awkwardly. Most players would have been done for the game, maybe for the week, although Wemby brushed it off, finishing with an all-time stat line of 52 points, 24 boards, and eight blocks. The Spurs held the Mavericks off, 112-111.

After the game, Wembanyama reflected on the near-miss.

Ever since he entered the league, and even before that, injury prevention has been Wembanyama's top priority. Critics suggested that his frame wouldn't be able to hold up in the NBA, although he has yet to miss significant time with an injury.

Remember, his sophomore season was cut short due to blood clots, not anything to do with on-court mismanagement! Flexibility, strength, and maintenance have all been pillars of his training regimen, although he knows that freak accidents can occur, and he nearly fell victim to one on Wednesday.

"The moment that stands out, for some reason, I don't have any agenda when I say it, but it's when I rolled my ankle," he said after the game. "I don't know. It's a very strong moment because both teams were really fighting at that moment. They stepped up their physicality and forced us to step up ours."

The Spurs have Thursday off, but will travel to take on the Sacramento Kings on Friday. In November, they won't ever get two days of rest. The schedule is particularly grueling, and even though Wembanyama feels okay, expect the Spurs to be conservative moving forward.

"I'm feeling fine. We'll see tomorrow."

His teammates are keenly aware that the collision with Clayton could have been catastrophic and are amazed by his ability to brush it off.

"He's Superman," summed up Dylan Harper. "I mean, he rolls an ankle and pops right up and acts as if nothing happened. I mean, I've never seen nothing like that. But that's just a testament to how he takes care of his body, how he focuses on his mobility, treatment, all that. So he's able to do things like that."
