A potential "hometown discount" for the Spurs' superstar could create the financial flexibility needed to pair the French phenom with LeBron James for a title run.

San Antonio Spurs big man Victor Wembanyama is unselfish on the floor, sort of like New York Knicks little man Jalen Brunson is.

What if Wemby - who is on the verge of a new monster contract with the Spurs - opts to mimic Brunson off the floor as well?

And what if that opens up a door to LeBron James coming to The Alamo?

Wemby has developed into one of the NBA's brightest stars in leading the Spurs to an NBA Finals berth, at which time they were manhandled by Brunson's Knicks.

This summer, the Spurs appear ready to make the commitment that will keep the franchise centerpiece in San Antonio for years to come.

Wembanyama is eligible for a massive rookie-scale contract extension now that the NBA's offseason negotiating window is open, and according to multiple reports, the projected deal could start at roughly five years and more than $250 million, with performance incentives potentially pushing the total value beyond $300 million.

Has the 7-4 Frenchman earned every dollar? That's not in dispute.

While the dollar figures are staggering, there is little debate around the league about whether the Spurs should make the offer. The only real question is how quickly the paperwork gets done.

But there is another way. ... and amid rumors that Wemby might take less than his max, it seems he sees it.

In 2024, Brunson offered to take less than the max to re-up with his hometown Knicks. He agreed to a four-year, $156.5 million contract extension - $113 million less guaranteed than he was eligible to sign for had he waited a year.

The move allowed New York to spend that $113 million elsewhere. The result? A championship roster.

Since arriving as the No. 1 overall pick in 2023, Wembanyama has exceeded virtually every expectation placed upon him. The 7-4 superstar has already established himself as the NBA's most dominant two-way player, earning unanimous Defensive Player of the Year honors, an All-NBA First Team selection, and leading San Antonio back into championship contention.

Wembanyama helped guide the Spurs to the NBA Finals while continuing to produce historic numbers on both ends of the floor. At just 22 years old, he is already drawing comparisons to some of the greatest players the league has ever seen. ...

A list that includes the free agent LeBron himself.

The speculation is that Wemby might sign for a "hometown discount'' to help the Spurs roster-build ... which might help attract the iconic James, who at 41 is leaving the Lakers for another shot at his fifth ring.

Simply put, franchise players rarely come around. Generational talents come around even less often. The Spurs know exactly what they have in Wemby ... and maybe Wemby is aware of how valuable it would be to add another generational talent - from another generation - in LeBron.
