Roster battles intensify as fringe players fight for final spots, while Jalen Green aims to solidify his breakout potential against a potentially shorthanded San Antonio squad.
The Phoenix Suns (1-2) are making a return trip to take on the San Antonio Spurs (0-3) in contest four of the five-game preseason slate Wednesday.
The Suns took the Spurs down by a score of 102-98 on Saturday night in Phoenix. Now, the longtime Western Conference rivals are once again challenging each other - particularly in different ways this time around.
Below are three aspects of the matchup to watch for Suns fans.
This Matchup Might Prove to be Opportunity for Fringe Rotation Pieces
The manner in which the starting lineup fits with the addition of Miles Bridges will be the area that is most closely watched in the weeks ahead.
However, there are battles amongst the margins of the roster that are equally crucial.
Duop Reath, Haywood Highsmith, and Jamaree Bouyea in particular are fighting for the final roster spots within the context of the 15-man team.
Each player represents a different position on the roster. The three players all bring different positives to the squad as well. Seeing all of them in action against elite competition for a second time will be a major litmus test, with finalizing of the 15-man in mind for GM Brian Gregory.
Beyond this, rookie Koa Peat needs as many minutes as possible in preseason play. It's unlikely that the 2026 first round selection will receive much run early in year one, so placing him in the fire of preseason action is the wisest course of action for head coach Jordan Ott.
How Does Jalen Green Look in Second Spurs Matchup?
There will always be eyes on how Green performs as long as he is wearing a Suns uniform.
The sixth-year guard is entering a crucial season of his career, while also juggling a possible role change.
The 6'4" guard is responding quite well - at least thus far. The 2021 lottery pick was excellent against the Spurs on Saturday, asserting himself as an efficient shot creator from the jump in the contest. He also dished out five assists, displaying growth that was a major point of discussion during media day two weeks ago.
If Green gives it a go on Wednesday, a second consecutive strong showing against an elite defense could lend even more hope to this finally becoming an inflection point for a breakout.
Spurs' Personnel Decisions May Limit What Suns Can Accomplish Overall
There's a very real possibility that the Spurs opt to rest their core roster on Wednesday.
While nothing is in stone, multiple stars on the roster sat out in their contest on Monday. The Spurs' roster is stout from top-to-bottom, but there are questions to how much the Suns can take out of a game where the core roster isn't facing Victor Wembanyama, Stephon Castle, and others.
This is something to monitor over the course of Wednesday.
