A defensive sparkplug with a tireless motor, the crafty combo guard battles for a roster spot while offering the bench essential rim pressure and elite change-of-pace play.
Just 33 days remain until the Phoenix Suns open up the 2026-27 regular season as of Sept. 18.
The hotly anticipated campaign is being entered with hopes of returning to the playoffs for the sixth time this decade, although challenges await the team, including an effort to integrate recently acquired forward Miles Bridges into the lineup.
One potential name to watch as a nice change-of-pace piece of the roster is the 27-year-old Jamaree Bouyea, who is entering his second season in Phoenix.
Make no mistake, there's no guarantee that the San Fransisco product makes the roster. There is a non-zero chance that the guard will have to solidify his spot in training camp, but there's also no doubt that the positives he can bring to the table have potential to be consequential to Phoenix's journey in the months ahead.
Among Bouyea's chief strengths are his kinetic defensive energy, his calm, collected approach to organizing offenses, and his ability to pressure the rim. Bouyea is far from the most physically gifted player in the NBA, but his lengthy wingspan and tireless motor play perfectly into the high-pressure perimeter defensive attack that is also accompanied by Collin Gillespie and Jordan Goodwin.
While Bouyea is a nice complimentary piece defensively, he is perhaps his most impactful on offense. The 6'2" guard is a career 27.6% shooter from three-point range, which would lead most to presume that he is simple to game-plan for.
This isn't quite the case, as the fifth-year combo guard is incredibly crafty on offense. Bouyea generally takes good care of the ball, makes good reads within the flow of the offense, and is perhaps the best at being able to change speeds with the ball in his hands on the entire roster.
Bouyea's craftiness when it comes to driving the ball, along with displaying incredible body control, makes him one of the most valuable players off of the bench for a team that doesn't statistically pressure the rim at a high rate.
While there are limitations to the veteran's game, he still provides definite value to a rotation that is built on versatility, buy-in, and consistency. GM Brian Gregory once again found a player that fits the newly installed culture, and the Suns are reaping the benefits of another value addition.
Bouyea's season is expected to begin with preseason play against the Detroit Pistons on October 5.
