Fresh off a career year, the defensive specialist returns to the Valley poised to anchor a versatile rotation while providing disruptive playmaking and multi-positional reliability.
Training camp is quickly approaching for the Phoenix Suns ahead of the 2026-27 season.
Phoenix has designs of returning to the playoffs this season, but are returning a mainstay of the previous team.
This mainstay is Jordan Goodwin, who is heading into his second full season with the organization following a first stint that ended in trade during the 2023-24 season.
Goodwin, 27, is coming off of a career year and is in-line for a substantial role under the watch of head coach Jordan Ott.
Follow reasonable expectations for the guard in the season ahead, an area the St. Louis native needs to improve upon, and a major storyline for the season ahead below.
Reasonable Goodwin Expectations This Season
The former Los Angeles Laker is coming off of a high-impact season. The baseline for expectations should be his raw statistical baseline of 8.7 PPG, 4.9 RPG, 2.2 SPG, and 1.5 SPG.
There's also a built-in expectation that the 6'3" guard will once again be a major difference-maker on the defensive side of the ball. Goodwin is extremely disruptive at the point of attack, while also holding the wingspan and athleticism to play bigger than his height.
Area of Improvement for Goodwin
The 6'3" veteran is gradually improving his three-point efficiency over the last two seasons, including a 37.1% mark in 2025-26.
This is a start, but overall efficiency as a scorer has to be an emphasis for the key rotation piece. Goodwin is below average efficiency wise (Crafted NBA), namely due to being a weaker finisher relative to the guard position. He also shot 69.6% from the free-throw stripe, again confirming that this is an area to work on as the season approaches.
Outside of this, Goodwin is exactly the type of player that any coach would love to employ. The Suns are in strong hands here.
Will Goodwin Play at Forward in 2026-27?
Goodwin's portability, defensive versatility, and lack of need to have the ball in his hands makes him an ideal candidate to play small forward yet again this campaign.
Beyond what Goodwin provides on the court is the advantage that Ott has in working with a roster that is more versatile pound-for-pound compared to the average NBA squad.
While Phoenix won't be as big as many opponents, they will have multi-positional versatility, as well as depth at guard and wing that is difficult to match.
