Third-year forward Ryan Dunn faces a defining crossroads. To secure his rotation spot under Jordan Ott, the defensive specialist must unlock his offensive potential and silence lingering doubts.
The 2026-27 season continues to creep closer for the Phoenix Suns, who are now just two weeks away from opening training camp.
The upcoming campaign is a crucial one for the future of the organization, as a great deal of the future hinges on internal development.
Part of this equation is third-year forward Ryan Dunn, who is heading into a crucial season himself following a pair of seasons that haven't instilled much confidence in his long-term viability in Phoenix.
Follow key aspects of Dunn's season ahead - including a key storyline that may follow the former first-round draft selection - below.
What is Reasonable Expectation for Dunn in 2026-27?
Dunn is one of the more challenging players to pinpoint expectations-wise in the season ahead.
The Virginia alum is coming off of two seasons averaging between 19-20 minutes per game. While the 23-year-old did play in 70 games last season, he also fell out of favor in the rotation at times due to inconsistency on offense.
A reasonable expectation seems to be playing in 70 games, averaging around six points/four rebounds per contest, and to improve his three-point efficiency by 1-2%.
Dunn Must Tangibly Improve Offensively
As aforementioned, Dunn is facing much pressure to become more consistent offensively.
While the 2024 draft pick is progressing positively as a three-point shooter, he still doesn't utilize his athleticism in the ways that he needs to. The 6'7" wing also isn't a standout playmaker, slasher, or connector of the offense.
Dunn simply must grow across the board offensively to justify head coach Jordan Ott playing him regularly.
How Long Will Dunn's Stay be in Suns' Rotation?
One major question around Dunn's third season in Phoenix rests in what has been aforementioned.
Just how much runway will Dunn have (if any) in coach Ott's rotation? The injury to center Mark Williams seems to be opening up the opportunity for the wing to receive playing time to start the season, but he still faces challenges at his position.
This includes second-year forward Rasheer Fleming and rookie Koa Peat. While the guard rotation rules the day for the Suns, there are several capable wings that have an opportunity to sign and seal their spot in a tighter rotation as the season goes on.
It will ultimately be fascinating to monitor how and when Ott's trust in Dunn fluctuates over the course of 82 games.
