From Jalen Green’s potential stardom to lingering turnover troubles, discover which tactical adjustments and roster developments will define Phoenix’s pursuit of a title this regular season.
Preseason play is officially in the books for the Phoenix Suns.
The next step? The opening of regular season play, which Phoenix will realize on Oct. 21 against the Portland Trail Blazers.
While preseason doesn't offer a full scope of what a team can take into the 82-game schedule, it can paint parts of a picture. Below are three of those takeaways and/or areas to monitor.
Is Jalen Green Leap Finally Here?
There has been considerable chatter year in and out that the former number two overall draft pick will finally make a leap into stardom.
Year six of Green's career is now upon him, with making a playmaking leap and scoring more efficienctly becoming more crucial than ever.
Green still has room to grow into his projected point guard role, although there are signs that his offseason work is paying off.
The 24-year old touched upon this topic following the 119-116 loss to the Utah Jazz on Friday night (Duane Rankin, Arizona Republic).
"I feel like the turnovers, I was trying to make the home run play, but overall, I feel scoring is something I've done so far my whole career. Not really too much worried about that part. I'm worried about trying to make the right pass."
The game seems to be slowing down for Green in many ways. He seems to be making real effort to build a rapport with teammates such as Khaman Maluach and Miles Bridges. There's still a ways to go to reach his full potential, but early signs of growth are positive.
Ditto as a scorer. Green shot a combined 6-10 from three-point range over his final two games of preseason. The 6'4" guard was getting to the rim in a more seamless manner, which led to a higher volume of free throw looks. It certainly seems as if there's a different gear that Green is reaching heading into the new year - now is the time for the former G-League Ignite prodigy to put it into practice.
Suns Continuing to Smooth Out Operational Issues
Two of the biggest concerns for the Suns in preseason play reside in operational errors. Phoenix is turning the ball over far too much, and is ceding far too many fouls/opportunities for the opponent to cash in on free throws themselves.
This issue is gradually improving, as Phoenix only coughed up 18 turnovers on Friday. This seems to be a result of numerous factors, but the onus will truly be on the starting five to keep the team's turnover output at 13.0 or less per game.
Rotation Hopefuls Have Ground to Cover in Development
The belief heading into the season was that second-year forward Rasheer Fleming would have the inside track to being the main reserve to Miles Bridges in the wing rotation.
This doesn't seem to be the case now, as Ryan Dunn is receiving preseason starts and playing regularly with the second unit. Fleming's purported lack of growth on both ends is harrowing right now, but fans must understand that development isn't linear.
Even if the Saint Joseph's product isn't making strides that some hoped he would, he is far from a lost cause. It's also inherently a positive that Dunn is seemingly taking a leap forward himself. The same goes for Koa Peat. It seems unlikely that the rookie will play much off the bat, and he has a distance to grow in certain aspects on the floor. However, the 19-year-old's talent and IQ base is enough to feel confident that the coaching staff will work magic in his development.
