Chris Finch 'In Awe' of Battle Between Anthony Edwards and Victor Wembanyama cover image

The Minnesota Timberwolves may have lost the San Antonio Spurs on Saturday, but the stars of each team certainly made it interesting.

The Minnesota Timberwolves may have not gotten what they wanted from their Saturday matchup against the San Antonio Spurs after a 126-123 loss, but that doesn't mean they didn't put on a show in the process.

Minnesota trailed by as much as 25 at one point in the game, but fought all the way back, similarly to the way they came from behind against the Spurs on Christmas Day, to take the lead 113-110 with just under three minutes left in the game.

A New Career High for Edwards

Anthony Edwards once again led the way for the Timberwolves with a massive 55 point performance while shooting 19-33 from the field and 9-16 from three point range. It was a new career-high for points in a game for Edwards and yet another chapter in the young guards' already extraordinary NBA career.

"Phenomenal," Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch said of Edwards' performance (via Timberwolves). "Obviously, I thought he got to the three point line pretty easy. [He] got a lot of great looks. Teammates did a really good job of screening for him. Made big shot after big shot. So, he was inspirational tonight."

Edwards has stood out as not only one of the best players in the NBA in his six season career, but one of the faces of the league itself. His exhilarating offense and vibrant personality have made him a recognizable face in the basketball world and his ability to lead the surging Timberwolves only further cements his star status.

Ant and Wemby Go to War

One of the most exciting things about the budding rivalry between the Timberwolves and the Spurs is the matchups that naturally occur between Edwards and another new face of the NBA, Victor Wembanyama.

Just as Edwards led the Timberwolves throughout the game, Wembanyama did the same for the Spurs.

Wembanyama scored 39 points with nine rebounds and two blocks in Saturday's game and as the game heated up in the fourth quarter and the Timberwolves were rushing toward tying the game both the respective stars of each team were going shot for shot.

"In awe of all the talent that's out there. The shot making in the fourth quarter by both him and Wembanyama was pretty special," Finch said.

A Bright Future for the League

Edwards scored 23 points in the fourth quarter alone while Wembanyama scored 13, including the very last point of the game with a free throw.

Each of the two stars were responsible for keeping the game close and in Wembanyama's case, securing the San Antonio win.

The future is certainly bright with these two young stars leading the way and there are certainly more legendary matchups to come.
