The San Antonio Spurs absolutely dismantled the Minnesota Timberwolves.
It looked like the Minnesota Timberwolves had a chance to shock the world in Game 5 against the San Antonio Spurs. After surprisingly winning Game 4 against the Spurs, there was some momentum on the side of the Timberwolves.
None of that supposed momentum mattered in Game 5 as the San Antonio Spurs dismantled the Minnesota Timberwolves 126-97. The Spurs led by as many as 30 points, and the Timberwolves' biggest lead was only 2 points.
Victor Wembanyama absolutely crushed the Timberwolves as soon as the game started, and finished the game with 27 points, 17 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 blocks on 56/40/78 shooting from the field.
What Went Wrong for the Timberwolves
When Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch addressed the media after the loss, he was quick to address what went wrong for this team. There were moments during the game when the score was close, but Finch believes his team went away from that.
"We went away from what was working," Finch said. "Our defense was just cratered; we gave up 30 points in the last 6 minutes of the third quarter. A lot of it was just ball containment, ball contain stuff. Offensively, we found stuff that was working, and then we just started breaking off plays."
Finch was then asked what he believed could help fix the situation for Game 6, and he had an immediate solution. Sometimes, offense leads to defense, and Finch believes his team's offense needs fixing before anything else - specifically, the offensive decision-making.
"We gotta make some shots," Finch added. "Better offensive decisions. I think we some of our shot selection in the first quarter in particular was a little iffy. There's some better shots, we're going to have to work a little harder to find some better shots early."
Is it Over for the Minnesota Timberwolves?
If there's one thing that the Minnesota Timberwolves have shown throughout these playoffs, it's that they're resilient. No matter how shorthanded they are, no matter how much of an underdog they are, the team finds a way to compete.
No one expected the Timberwolves to even be in the second round against the Spurs, let alone take the series to a Game 6. With that in mind, their fanbase shouldn't give up hope until the series is over.
At the same time, a team can only have so much gas before they finally run on empty. Tuesday night's performance in Game 5 felt like one where the Timberwolves finally felt empty. Victor Wembanyama absolutely destroyed Rudy Gobert and the vaunted Timberwolves defense.
The Minnesota Timberwolves have until Friday to find a solution to their offensive and defensive woes.
