Jonathan Kuminga is already comfortable with the Minnesota Timberwolves.
The Minnesota Timberwolves are set to debut their new roster on Wednesday, October 21, when they take on the Miami Heat.
The Timberwolves will welcome LaMelo Ball and Jonathan Kuminga to the starting lineup and to the team. The Timberwolves made the move early in the offseason to acquire Ball, trading Naz Reid and Julius Randle.
Kuminga was signed later in the offseason, accepting a mid-level exception after turning down more money from the Los Angeles Lakers early in the offseason. He ended up signing a two-year, $12 million deal with a player option.
Kuminga signed knowing he would be part of the starting lineup alongside Ball, Anthony Edwards, Jaden McDaniels, and Rudy Gobert.
Jonathan Kuminga Speaks
Signing with the team late in the offseason means getting a late start in building team chemistry.
For Kuminga, the transition has been easy.
“I think I'm very comfortable. I think part of it for me is just being around these guys everyday. I think if it was stuck people, stuck up personalities, I wouldn't be that comfortable. But I feel like everybody's personality is very open and welcoming,” he said.
Benny Sieu-Imagn ImagesKuminga reiterated that he’s been very comfortable with Minnesota and that he can call anybody for anything, whether it is on or off the court.
Kuminga started last season with the Golden State Warriors after lengthy and contentious offseason contract negotiations as a restricted free agent. He ended the season with the Atlanta Hawks after a midseason trade in which the Warriors acquired Kristaps Porzingis.
Kuminga’s Fit
The addition of Kuminga brought extra excitement to the Timberwolves as it solved their frontcourt issues, which were a glaring weakness before Kuminga signed.
The Timberwolves were either prepared to start Trey Lyles at the four or go small with Jaden McDaniels at the four and Ayo Dosunmu in the backcourt. With Kuminga, their starting lineup is whole, and he fits how they want to play.
Kuminga’s best game in the preseason came in his final preseason game when the Timberwolves took on the Pistons. He went 5-6 from the floor for 16 points to go along with four rebounds, three assists, and one steal.
Minnesota is expecting him to fit in offensively, contributing throughout the game while also making life easier for LaMelo Ball and Anthony Edwards. On defense, he will be a disruptor who is protected by Rudy Gobert as the anchor in the middle and Jaden McDaniels flanking him on the wing.
