When the Minnesota Timberwolves signed Mike Conley during the 2023 NBA season, there was a heavy expectation that he could be a stabilizing force for the team. It was a role that Conley excelled at as both a member of the Memphis Grizzlies and the Utah Jazz.

At one point, Conley was doing a fantastic job as that leader for the Timberwolves. The team reached two Western Conference Finals in a row and somehow defeated the Denver Nuggets while shorthanded this season.

Unfortunately, at 38 years old now, Conley is only averaging 4.5 points, 1.7 rebounds, and 2.9 assists on 33.5% shooting from the field.

It was time for a change.

In Conley's 20th NBA season, he has departed the Minnesota Timberwolves for the Boston Celtics. The former Timberwolves guard has agreed to a one-year deal with Boston.

According to Shams Charania of ESPN, Conley went through a handful of offers before coming to a final decision. It's a strange decision for the Boston Celtics because it's hard to see how Conley would fit on the team, unless they solely wanted him for veteran presence.

While the Minnesota Timberwolves heavily relied on Conley in the past, they have a fantastic guard rotation this season with the addition of LaMelo Ball.

Currently, the Timberwolves have LaMelo Ball, Anthony Edwards, Isaiah Evans, Terrence Shannon Jr., Donte DiVincenzo, and Bones Hyland.

LaMelo Ball: Ball will be the starting point guard for the Timberwolves moving forward. There will be heavy expectations on him to be a legitimate number two behind Anthony Edwards, but there should be some concern that Ball has never played meaningful basketball. Regardless, he's still a phenomenal player.

Isaiah Evans: Evans was the 33rd overall pick in the NBA draft and was also third-team All-ACC with Duke last season. If Donte DiVincenzo wasn't hurt, it would be hard to see if Evans would get legitimate playing time early in the season.

Terrence Shannon Jr.: Terrence only averaged 5.6 points last season, but he became a legitimate role player during the 2026 NBA playoffs. Evans had four games of 10+ points during the playoffs and put up 21 points in his final game of the season against the San Antonio Spurs in Game 6.

Donte DiVincenzo: DiVincenzo is currently dealing with a torn right Achilles tendon and is expected to be out for quite some time. He was a critical member of the Timberwolves' guard rotation.

Bones Hyland: Bones was a steady member of the Timberwolves rotation as a backup point guard last season, but struggled tremendously during the postseason. During the playoffs, he only averaged 4.6 points, 1.5 assists, and 1.3 rebounds on 30/27/88 shooting from the field.
