Could Ja Morant join Anthony Edwards in Minnesota?
The Minnesota Timberwolves might undergo some changes in the offseason as they lost in six games to the San Antonio Spurs in the second round of the NBA playoffs.
The Timberwolves had made back-to-back Western Conference Finals before failing to reach the third round in three straight seasons.
Minnesota lost to the Oklahoma City Thunder in five games in the WCF last season, and with the Spurs and Thunder meeting in the WCF this season and built for the long haul, questions have arisen regarding just how competitive Minnesota can be in the conference.
Minnesota was banged up in the second round as Anthony Edwards entering the series with a bone bruise in his knee that looked to limit some of his usual athleticism and explosiveness on the court. They were also missing Donte DiVincenzo, their starting point guard.
A New Starting Point Guard?
ESPN put together a number of mock trades, one of which includes the Timberwolves dealing for Memphis Grizzlies point guard Ja Morant.
The trade in full is Morant to Minnesota in exchange for Julius Randle, Terrence Shannon Jr., and Joan Beringer.
On paper, adding Morant would make some sense for Minnesota. He's a dynamic point guard who can take playmaking duties out of Edwards ' hands.
As well as Edwards and DiVincenzo have played together, DiVincenzo plays better as a floor spacing shooter. He's also going to miss the majority, if not the entire, 2026-27 season after suffering a torn Achilles.
Morant would take a lot of extra stress off Edwards, who was constantly forced to give up the ball by the Spurs as they set double teams early and often.
Does The Trade Make Sense?
While Morant in Minnesota makes sense, the proposed trade doesn't make much sense.
First, Minnesota would actually be adding salary as Morant is making $42 million this upcoming season while Randle, Shannon Jr, and Beringer make $40 million. This move could make it more difficult to sign Ayo Dosunmu, who they acquired at the trade deadline and shown interest in retaining.
The Timberwolves already lack depth compared to the Spurs and Thunder, and this move puts them further away in that department.
Randle is a starter, Shannon Jr has played significant playoff minutes, and Beringer is looked at as a future rotation piece, potentially as early as this upcoming season.
Adding Morant leaves them with a starting lineup of Edwards, Morant, Jaden McDaniels, Naz Reid, and Rudy Gobert.
That's not only their starting lineup, that's nearly their entire team as Dosunmu, Mike Conley, Kyle Anderson, and Bones Hyland are unrestricted free agents and DiVincenzo will miss time.
Their bench would consist of Julian Phillips (club option), Rocco Zikarsky (two-way deal), Zyon Pullin (two-way deal), and Jaylen Clark (restricted free agent).
Those four played a combined 1,061 minutes last season, with Clark accounting for 888 of those minutes.
That doesn't even take into accout Morant's injury history, because if he gets hurt, Minnesota will be at a significant disadvantage on the court with their lack of depth.
