Who should the Minnesota Timberwolves look to acquire in the offseason?

The Minnesota Timberwolves may look to reshape their roster after a second round exit in six games to the San Antonio Spurs.

Minnesota made it to the Western Confernce Finals in 2024 and 2025 before falling to the Spurs in 2026.

Despite inconsistencies in the regular season, the team has shown an ability to rise to the occasion in the playoffs, outperforming expectations when the stakes are raised. However, they haven't been able to get over the hump, and individals performances against the Spurs and Thunder, two teams expected to compete at the top of the conference for the next 5-10 years, have raised plenty of questions going into this offseason.

With that in mind, who should the Timberwolves look to acquire to potentially get them over the hump?

3. Joel Embiid

The availability of Embiid is currently unknown and there haven't been sustained trade rumors, but the writing might be on the wall in Philadelphia after the team failed to get out of the second round once again despite coming back down 3-1 in the first round against the Boston Celtics.

If the Sixers decide to retool and make Embiid available, Minnesota would be wise to make a play.

Their are obvious durability concerns with Embiid, but he showed that he's still one of the best centers in the league when he can stay healthy. He's still an impactful two-way player and an upgrade over Julius Randle or Rudy Gobert.

Acquiring Embiid would likely signify the of Randle and Gobert in Minnesota, as one would have to be involved in the deal, and the other would likely head elsewhere.

2. Kawhi Leonard

The Clippers could decide to enter into more of a rebuild going into next season after already trading Ivica Zubac and James Harden, and getting the fifth overall pick from the Indiana Pacers.

Kawhi had his healthiest season in years this past year, and though it wasn't good enough to lead to the Clippers back to the playoffs, he would provide a strong second option next to Anthony Edwards.

1. Giannis Antetokounmpo

We already know that the Timberwolves have interest in Giannis as they were reportedly one of the suitors inquiring about his availability ahead of the NBA trade deadline.

Though injuries tanked his 2025-26 season, he remains one of the five best players in the league and a game-changer on both ends of the floor.

Acquiring Giannis would give Minnesota a true second option next to Edwards and someone who would thrive on or off the ball.
