Tim Connelly didn't deny the influence that Anthony Edwards has.
When a team has one standout star, it's natural for that player to have a big role not only on the court, but in certain moves that the team makes when it comes to personnel.
That could be pushing for a coaching change or advocating for a certain player in free agency on on the trade market, or at least a certain type of player, pointing out a need they feel the roster has that should be addressed.
Anthony Edwards is certainly in the position to be that kind of player. He is undoubtedly the franchise star and has spent enough time on the roster, steadily improving all the way, to earn the kind of clout that could help dictate a roster decision.
Explaining Edwards' Impact
According to Minnesota Timberwolves president of basketball operations Tim Connelly, tat's exactly the kind of influence that Edwards has. In a recent interview with Dan Barreiro, Connelly said that Edwards has "as big a voice" as any other major decision maker within the organization and looking at the moves Minnesota has made this offseason, that statement makes sense.
The obvious move that the Timberwolves made that Edwards could have had a hand in is the trade for LaMelo Ball and Josh Green from the Charlotte Hornets.
Ball does make the Timberwolves better, adding a true playmaker that can better set up Edwards' scoring rather than forcing Edwards himself to play out of position as the point guard, something that he did often this past season.
That reason alone might be good enough to believe that Edwards had a hand in the decision, but if finding a playmaker alone was enough, the Timberwolves might have had options that didn't have to involve trading away Naz Reid.
A Personality Fit
The selection of Ball in particular seems more likely to be the result of Edwards' influence. Ball and Edwards seem to be a great personality match: two exciting 24-year-old guards with outspoken personalities, and if they weren't friends off the court before, they seem to have struck up a fast friendship after Edwards said that Ball has been hanging out at his house.
If Edwards was a big voice involved in trading for Ball in particular, then it proved both to be a savvy move for basketball reasons and and a fulfilling move for personal reasons, and if Edwards is having fun on the court with someone he helped bring to the team, that only helps the Timberwolves chances of keeping their star long term.
