Brandin Podziemski discussed what Steve Kerr called his best game of the season.
With all of the injuries that the Golden State Warriors have suffered over the past few weeks, they've needed some players to step up and fill the gaps left behind. Of course, recreating the impact that someone like Steph Curry has on the team, particularly on offense, is far easier said than done, but there are a few players who have taken up the challenge and prospered.
One such player is Brandin Podziemski. The third-year guard got off to a bit of a rough start earlier this season, but has really rounded into form as of late. Most importantly, he's been available, playing every single game this year and offering a steady presence when much of the Warriors' rotation has otherwise been in flux.
Podziemski Discusses His Best Game This Season
On Thursday evening, Podziemski was one of the leaders in the Warriors' major 115-113 overtime upset over the Rockets, posting a season-high 26 points and 9 rebounds while shooting 10-18 from the field and 4-8 from three-point range.
After the win, Podziemski talked about what it felt like to play what Steve Kerr described as his best game this season.
"Yeah, (it probably was my best game). We won. That's the most important thing. I felt I was composed. Just try to make the right play all the time. We won the game, so I think that's most important to me."
Podziemski also discussed how much this win meant to the Warriors as a whole.
"We needed it. After the Memphis game, we looked at the next four. We knew that the first two weren't as tough as these two, and to not get those two at home, we just had to figure out a way to get it done tonight. Play with our backs against the wall and figure out how to win."
Podziemski Offers Stable Play When Curry Is Out
Curry being out throws the entire offense out of sorts, considering the system is built around the gravity he creates in his off-ball movement and overall danger as a shooter.
In his absence, though, Podziemski has done a valiant job keeping the Warriors afloat while occupying a much larger role on offense.
In 23 games this year without Curry, Podziemski has averaged 14 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game — an increase in all stats, particularly rising his point average by 1.4. Though his efficiency does take a hit in these games, it's an expected change due to the increased responsibilities, as he takes almost 2.5 more shots per game.
Importantly, Podziemski's defense is an attribute that never wavers. He's elite at taking charges, being one of the best in the NBA at that particular niche, but he's also greatly improved both his on-ball defense and help defense mechanics.
On the season, the Warriors are 6.6 points better defensively when Podziemski is on the floor — the best mark of any player on the Warriors this year.
His role can change at a moment's notice depending on who's in or out of the lineup, but there's no doubt that Podziemski has solidified himself as a stable presence that can offer quality play day in and day out.
