This offseason, one of the most active teams in terms of making moves to upgrade its roster is the Miami Heat. Miami traded for former MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo just before the NBA Draft and has since been looking to build a championship-caliber roster around him. 

Just recently, the Heat added another piece that could help them become one of the top teams in the NBA, as they signed former Golden State Warriors shooting guard Klay Thompson. 

Since Klay departed from Golden State in 2024, he spent time with the Dallas Mavericks. Dallas ultimately bought out Thompson's deal, and now Miami is where he will spend his next season. 

Warriors forward Draymond Green recently shared his thoughts on the move and how the Miami Heat are a good fit for his former teammate. 

“I love the move. I love this for Klay. I know Klay is happy he’s in Miami. He’s around water. I know this move makes him a happy man…" Green said. 

Green mentioned how Klay Thompson enjoys being by the water and how he believes that is something that drew him to a city like Miami. He also mentioned that Thompson is closer to his family in the Bahamas. 

Draymond Green also went into detail about the 'Heat Culture' mantra the franchise has held for several years now. Green says Klay Thompson is someone who "moves to the beat of his own drum," and an example of that was shown in the introductory press conference, where he showed up late due to being stuck in traffic. 

Klay Thompson will be seen as someone who can provide reliable shooting for the Heat, who have two players in Bam Adebayo and Giannis Antetokounmpo who thrive off inside scoring. 

Draymond Green mentioned that there should not be assumptions that Klay will start on opening night for Miami, as they signed another shooting threat in Tim Hardaway Jr. this offseason. 

Still, Klay's shooting may prove to be crucial to this team. While he may be a great help, this is not the same Klay Thompson from his days with the Warriors. Klay has dealt with multiple injuries in the past that have hindered with his mobility. 

When he played alongside Steph Curry, he was able to move around the court efficiently and find his open spots to succeed, but in Miami, he could be looking at more of a spot-up shooter role. 

Klay Thompson will make his Miami Heat debut in their season opener on October 21 against the Minnesota Timberwolves at the Kaseya Center.
