Draymond Green shared his thoughts on free agency and the Warriors' family dynamic.
The Golden State Warriors have a lot to decide in the coming weeks, including Steve Kerr's role as head coach and the subsequent contract choices players will make in the wake of that decision.
Draymond Green is perhaps the player most dependent on Kerr's decision, given their decade-plus relationship, but it's also that relationship he can fall back on when considering his options and looking back on his experiences.
Green Shares Thoughts On Free Agency, Warriors' Family Dynamic
On the Post Moves podcast with Candace Parker and Aliyah Boston this past Wednesday, Green discussed a wide variety of topics, including the WNBA, NBA, and different fun tidbits.
One topic was especially pertinent to the overarching story of the past few weeks, as Green gave some of his thoughts on his pending $27 million player option.
"I have a player option right now going into the summer. I'm never going to stay somewhere where I'm not wanted, right? So I'm not in a situation where it's like, 'I got to opt in to get this money or it's over for me.' I'll have some other options, I believe, right? But ultimately I do know that they want me to still be here. That's great and a music to my ears and a pillow on my heart. I'm forever grateful for that."
Green also dove into the family dynamic that he's experienced with the Warriors in his 14 years in Golden State.
"We do know that Steve Kerr was on the last year of his deal, right? Again, this is a great partnership. This is a family. Steve Kerr said to me, 'Draymond, you know how you said the Warriors is your alma mater? This is mine, too.' We love this place. This just isn't some, 'We played for this team, we're collecting a check. We all move on now.' 20 years from now, Steve is gonna be old as hell and he's still gonna be sitting at these Warriors games. I'm gonna be 56 years old, old as hell, sitting at these games. Steph gonna be 60, old as hell, sitting at these games. This isn't just like, 'We all go on now and this is over.' This is a family. As we know it today, this could be it. This isn't the end of the family, but it could be it."
It's well-documented just how much Green, Kerr, Steph Curry, and even Klay Thompson mean to each other after they battled on the court together for over a decade and came away with four championships.
No matter what ends up happening with Kerr, Green, and Curry in the next few months or years, they'll always be enshrined as legends for how they've built up the culture and brand of the Warriors' franchise.
