The Golden State Warriors have been blessed over the past 12 years to have Steve Kerr, Steph Curry, and Draymond Green all together. Though they've had some quality teammates next to them, notably Klay Thompson, Kevin Durant, Jimmy Butler, and more, those three are the ones who have persisted for this entire tenure and represent the franchise to a T.
However, with Kerr now potentially on his way out as head coach, pending a decision between him and the Warriors' front office, led by owner Joe Lacob and general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr., the legacy this trio has crafted together may end up being one of the few things that can keep this iteration of the Warriors intact.
Kerr Shares How Curry And Green Impact His Future
In a recent long-form interview with The New Yorker, Kerr opened up about a range of topics, from his thoughts on the Warriors to personal opinions on social and political issues. One topic of interest was his pending decision on whether to return to the Warriors.
"This is a really interesting situation, and I'm very respectful of the organization and their place in the universe right now. And I know how this stuff works. Most coaching runs just last a certain amount of time, and then it's best for everybody to move forward. And what we have to figure out right now is whether now is that time, because what complicates it is we still have Steph and Draymond (for) another year each on their contracts. And I don't want to abandon those guys."
Kerr considered the different scenarios that could play out and reassured that he has faith that things will all turn out well.
"If Steph and Draymond were retiring this year, I think this would be an easy decision: we all go out together and the organization takes their new path. But it's not that easy because I think Steph's going to play another couple of years and I think we can still do some good things together. But these are all conversations that will happen in the next week or two and we'll figure it out. And whatever happens, it's going to end well. I know that, because it's too important not to."
It's a big show of faith, not only in himself, Curry, and Green, but also in the Warriors' organization to know that even if this core is no longer around, things will still be positive.
This Trio Has Had Unbelievable Results
There's no doubt that the quality teams around these three have helped tremendously in the past 11 years, but there's also a real argument to make that, at least on the court, Curry and Green are the two most valuable Warriors, no matter who else is besides them. The incredible results and resume they've built up are proof of this.
Since Kerr was hired in the summer of 2014, the Warriors have played 641 regular-season games where both Curry and Green were healthy. In those 641 games, the Dubs went 464-177, a staggering 72.4% win percentage. Across a normal 82-game season, that win percentage would equal a 59-23 record, which would have been good for third in the Western Conference and just one game back of first in the East this season.
When both Curry and Green are not playing, though, an occurrence that happened in 76 games over the 12 years, the Warriors' record drops to just 29-47, a 38.1% win percentage that would drop them all the way to 12th in the East this season and much closer to the bottom-feeder Western Conference teams.
