Jimmy Butler may be progressing faster than expected, but the Warriors still have reason to be cautious with their veteran star.
Golden State Warriors forward Jimmy Butler is reportedly making encouraging progress in his recovery from a torn right ACL.
“We’ve even heard some small hints about Jimmy Butler being ahead of schedule,” Brett Siegel said during a recent episode of “Clutch Scoops.”
Siegel also reported that Butler has experienced no setbacks and is targeting a return in early 2027. The Warriors reportedly hope to have him available before the February trade deadline, although the organization has not announced a formal timetable.
The update provides Golden State with some optimism after Butler’s season ended in January. He suffered the injury when he landed awkwardly during a victory over the Miami Heat on Jan. 19.
Butler underwent surgery Feb. 9 and began what was expected to be a lengthy rehabilitation process.
Warriors cannot rush Butler’s return
Being ahead of schedule does not guarantee Butler will return earlier than initially expected.
ACL rehabilitation contains several stages, and progress during the offseason does not necessarily indicate how a player’s knee will respond to cutting, contact and full-speed basketball activity. The Warriors have little reason to rush the process, particularly with Butler turning 37 in September.
Golden State must balance its need to compete with Stephen Curry against the risk of bringing Butler back before he is physically prepared.
Butler was averaging 20 points, 5.6 rebounds and 4.9 assists before the injury. His ability to create shots, draw fouls and defend multiple positions gave the Warriors a reliable second option next to Curry.
Golden State’s offense can survive portions of the regular season without him, but Butler’s physical style and postseason experience would be difficult to replace in high-pressure games.

Early 2027 remains realistic target
A return before the trade deadline would put Butler back on the court near the one-year anniversary of his injury and roughly 12 months after surgery.
That remains a demanding recovery timeline for an older player, even one with Butler’s conditioning and competitiveness. Golden State will likely prioritize how Butler moves and responds to increased workloads over targeting one specific game.
Butler previously indicated that he intended to play during the 2026-27 season. His reported progress strengthens that possibility without establishing a guaranteed return date.
The Warriors also need to remain competitive long enough for Butler’s return to matter. Every game Golden State can win during the opening months will reduce the pressure on him to immediately carry a heavy workload.
For now, the absence of setbacks may be the most meaningful part of the update. Butler still has several rehabilitation benchmarks to clear before he can return to practice or game action.
The possibility that he is ahead of schedule is encouraging. The Warriors, however, will need patience to ensure the version of Butler who returns can remain on the court when the season matters most. Golden State confirmed the injury in January and announced his successful surgery the following month.
